kleine tänzerin aka Maiko Sakurai Karner

Maiko Sakurai Karner was born in Vienna, Austria, to a Japanese mother and Austrian father. In her family where art was an omnipresent issue, Maiko soon discovered art & design as her true calling and approach. Maiko is Japanese and translated as “little dancer“ (= kleine tänzerin). This influence is easily visible in her designs, which are full of playfu

l details and versatile creations, expressing emotions. This brand represents the designer’s origin, as it points out her Eurasian descent, her Japanese and Austrian background makes 'kleine tänzerin' stand out. Another meaning of “Maiko” is “young Geisha”, which can be translated as “artist”. Geishas were considered as the incarnation of Japanese art forms. It only seems natural that music, dance, literature, and espacially fine arts are among Maiko’s sources of inspiration and also guide her to challenge herself to blur the lines between fine arts and jewellery. Maiko's visual art and paintings are a combination of an expressive and free in nature component on the one hand and an opposite unit, rich in details, structured with an almost disciplined character on the other. These diverse attributes can be found in the artist’s personality and originate again from growing up with and in between two very different cultures. The paintings are an abstract visualization of her ubiquitous topic – duality, but also represent her impression of this world. For example, living in the assertion of a globalized world, which can only be observed in correspondence to economic profit. At the same time, present political and economical developments create tendencies of extreme demarcation and polarizations of nationalities. Facts, which are scaring, but also inspiring and motivating Maiko, to create space for dialogues and discussions, through her art.

let me introduce you to a new project of mine:
unit_afroasianartproject

A.UNIT is an open platform for artists and cultural workers who identify themselves as and feel part of the Asian and/or African diaspora in Austria. The aim and task of A.UNIT is to provide a creative and safe space for the Afro-Asian communities in Vienna, where they can express and present themselves, support each other and make themselves heard.

A.UNIT advocates a system of values that stands for equal rights and freedom for all people, regardless of skin color, gender, language, religion, political opinion, ethnic or social origin. A.UNIT occupies the social space that everyone in Austria, regardless of their origin, is entitled to have. Through this platform, two marginalized groups (each in different ways) take their visible and audible stance in the Austrian mainstream society. A.UNIT offers space and time for this unique artistic-cultural connection that has never been seen before in Austria.

Together with and (and my humble self aka ), we are A.UNIT.

We are currently working on our programme and will inform you soon about all future endavours and will soon pressnt you our team of wonderful curators!
