Before and after of this cool opalised belemnite specimen from Coober Pedy.

A belemnite is the fossilised internal skeleton of an extinct squid-like marine animal that lived in the ancient inland sea. It is often called a “squid bone,” although it is technically an internal shell or skeleton.

This one has been lightly rubbed back to reveal some beautiful natural opal colour. It hasn’t been fully polished yet, and it looks like there may be another bar of colour underneath if someone wants to chase it further. For now, I’m going to leave it as it is.

Wow — thank God I got this one cut! I had it for sale in the rough, but I’m so glad it’s now a finished stone. This is an opalised belemnite from Coober Pedy, over 100 million years old. How insane are these colours for something that was once a prehistoric squid fossil? 🤯🔥
