Choosing a diamond isn't just about getting the biggest one. As a Graduate Gemologist, these are the first three things I look at before anything else.
💎 1. Cut – The most important factor
This is what makes a diamond sparkle.
A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, while a poorly cut diamond can look dull even if it has perfect color and clarity.
💍For round diamonds, choose Excellent Cut (GIA Triple Excellent if possible).
💍For fancy shapes (oval, emerald, radiant, pear, cushion), focus on good proportions rather than a cut grade, because GIA doesn't assign cut grades to these shapes.
If you only spend extra money on one thing, spend it on the cut.
✨ 2. Shape – Choose what suits you
Round, oval, emerald, radiant, pear, cushion… every shape has its own personality. Some maximise sparkle, while others create a more elegant or modern look. Pick the shape that matches your style, not just what's trending.
💰 3. Budget – Balance the 4Cs
Your budget helps determine the best combination of carat, colour and clarity. You don't always need the highest colour or flawless clarity to have a stunning diamond.
For example:
💎A 1.50 ct G VS2 may look almost identical to a 1.50 ct D VVS1 to the naked eye but cost thousands less.
💎Most people won't notice the difference between VS1 and VVS1, but they will notice sparkle and size.
At the end of the day, the "best" diamond isn't the most expensive one, it's the one that is beautifully cut, suits your style, and fits your budget.
