Heirloom sapphires and diamonds, reset in sterling silver.

Silver isn’t the metal we conventionally associate with heirloom jewellery, but I’m not particularly interested in gatekeeping what an heirloom should be made from.

When choosing materials for a piece, it’s important to understand how different metals wear and age, and what that means for longevity and maintenance. There are very good reasons why gold and platinum are traditionally chosen for jewellery intended to last generations.

But understanding those considerations and making an informed choice is quite different from deciding which materials — or which pieces — are worthy of holding someone’s history.

The intrinsic worth of these stones didn’t change when they were set in silver. Their history didn’t either.

Preciousness can come from the material, certainly. But it can also come from memory, provenance, craftsmanship and what we choose to carry forward.

I was recently asked to create a pendant around a much-loved opal so it could become part of everyday wear rather than remain tucked away.

The final piece was kept deliberately restrained — sterling silver, a softened hexagonal form and small diamond details that subtly frame the stone rather than compete with it.

A ring made to mark a much-loved companion.

This piece pairs a round Australian parti sapphire with a pear-shaped ch*****ne diamond, set side by side in 18ct yellow gold. The stones were chosen for their gentle contrast and warmth, and to reflect the colouring of the cat it remembers.

Inside the band, a small paw print has been engraved — a private detail for the wearer and a quiet reference to the companion this ring was made to honour.

Some commissions carry stories known only to the wearer.
