Lab-grown vs. Mined diamonds 💎
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that lab-grown diamonds are “fake.” They aren’t.
Both lab-grown and mined diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same chemical composition (carbon), the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), and the same sparkle when they’re cut well. The main difference is how they’re formed.
✨ Mined diamonds
• Form naturally underground over billions of years.
• Every stone has its own natural growth history.
• Their rarity means some colours, sizes and cuts are incredibly difficult to find.
• Generally hold a higher market value due to their natural origin and rarity.
• Perfect if owning a naturally formed diamond is important to you.
✨ Lab-grown diamonds
• Created in a laboratory using technology that replicates the natural diamond-growing process.
• Physically, chemically and optically the same as mined diamonds.
• Typically allow you to purchase a larger or higher-quality diamond for a much lower budget.
• Because they can be produced more consistently, they’re available in an incredible range of colours, sizes and cuts- including combinations that would be exceptionally rare or simply not commercially realistic to source in natural diamonds.
• A great option if size, colour variety or value is your priority.
So… which is better?
Neither. They’re just different.
I work with both because they each have their place. Whether you choose a lab-grown or mined diamond should come down to what matters most to you- your budget, the look you’re after, rarity, or the story behind your stone.
My job isn’t to tell you which one you should buy. It’s to give you the information you need to make the right decision for you.
