Clivia, my floral Friday offering to you.
A shade-loving garden favourite
Originally from southern Africa, Clivias are wonderfully tough, low-maintenance plants that bring a splash of colour to shady parts of the garden. They thrive in bright, filtered light or dappled shade, making them perfect for spots beneath trees or along sheltered garden beds. Their bright red, orange or yellow flowers are also a wonderful reminder that shady gardens don’t have to be dull. They prefer well-drained soil and are happiest when left to settle in rather than being constantly moved.
Once established, Clivias need very little attention. Water regularly while they’re establishing, then allow the soil to dry out slightly between watering. A little compost or slow-release fertiliser in spring will encourage healthy growth and beautiful flowering. 🌱
Fun fact: Clivias can live for decades and actually flower better when their roots are a little crowded — so there’s no need to rush to divide them!
