Arthur Field, a Londoner who arrived in Tasmania as a teenager, established himself as a respected Scottsdale watchmaker and jeweller. His ties to the region were further cemented in 1888 when he married Ruth Birchall, daughter of well-known Launceston bookseller and stationer Andrew Birchall and his wife Harriet. Arthur was involved in his community, contributing to its workplace, sporting, and musical circles.

Update to Hands of Time listing for Thomas Swan.

Watchmaker and jeweller, Thomas Swan, was born and died in Randalstown, Antrim, Ireland. He spent time in Launceston between about 1855 to 1863, working from Wellington and Elizabeth Streets. Thomas repaired a pocket watch for surveyor and pioneer James Scott in 1855, and in 1859, sold tickets for the laying of the foundation stone ceremony for Chalmers Church. When he returned to Ireland, his two Launceston-born daughters remained in Victoria, where they settled and lived long lives.

Canadian brothers Lawrence and Philander Wartman operated a clock and watchmaking business in the Green Ponds district (Kempton) in 1856. Lawrence was recorded as a watchmaker and married Mary Amanda Swinton in Hobart in 1857 before relocating to Prahran, Melbourne, where he worked in his trade for many years. Philander also moved to Melbourne but returned to Canada by 1863, where he studied medicine.

They connected with former convict and clock and watchmaker William Brooks. Mr Brooks recommended their business after withdrawing his intention to open a branch of his own in the Green Ponds district.
