Retipping prongs is one of the most cost-effective ways to give a worn ring a new lease on life. Instead of pulling everything apart and resetting the stones, a skilled jeweller can rebuild just the tips — the small but mighty points that hold your stone in place — without disturbing anything else.

And yes, your diamond can handle it. Diamonds are tough enough to withstand the heat of the process, making retipping a straightforward fix for most diamond rings.

That said, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Larger or more fragile stones need a different approach — but for the right ring, retipping can add years to its life.

I repaired Kerry’s cracked wedding band. It had split along a previous repair line, so I added a dovetail cut to give the seam strength. After a thorough polish and shaping the ring back to round, it’s ready for daily life again.

Part 1 of creating the signet ring.

I had a piece of locally sourced bloodstone leftover from my pendant and I like the deep greens and reds throughout the stone. I thought I’d make a matching statement piece.

I shaped the bloodstone into a square radiant cut stone. Hours of work at the wheel - cutting, polishing, engraving.

Worth it. It’s going to look awesome.

It will go on my signet ring that is in the previous wax carving video.

How I test for gold purity before starting a jewellery repair:

✅ check for stamps and manufacturer’s marks
✅ start an acid test with the 18kt solution
✅ draw a line on the slate with the metal
✅ if the 18kt solution eats the line, the metal is a lower purity
✅ try the 14kt solution on the metal line. If it doesn’t disappear the purity is between 14kt and less than 18kt
✅ I can now choose the right solder for the repair
