I have two pieces of jewellery included in the “Reimagined“ group exhibition at the Alberta Craft Council Gallery in Calgary. It was fun to really think outside the box and get creative with materials I don’t normally use.
The challenge was to go through a pile of preloved, old, worn costume jewellery and come up with something new. I was drawn to two mother of pearl rectangles that had been shoe clips, and based my design around them. I picked up a few single pearl studs, an old floral brooch with missing rhinestones, a glass pearl strand with a broken clasp, and some mismatch clip on earrings.
Keeping with my theme of the garden (which I find a way to incorporate into most of my work!) I called this necklace and earring set “second spring,” playing off the idea of rebirth and second chances.
The show opening artist reception is next weekend May 16th 2pm - 4pm. The exhibition is free and open to the public at the Alberta Craft Calgary Gallery - cSPACE Marda Loop. 1721 - 29 Avenue SW Calgary, Alberta. The exhibition runs May 16th - June 22.
