Here are some earrings that I made recently - a new design that I am working out to celebrate the ceremonial blankets and Cedar hats worn on the coast - the pattern on the back isn’t a traditional design, it’s an ocean wave in colours that made me think of abolone and water - it’s a work in progress and there will be more to come but I thought I would share this first edition! ❤️

This is wonderful! Please pass it along ❤️

May 5 is the National Day for Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S), also known as Red Dress Day. On this day, the nation honours the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people and supports grieving families and community healing. In honour of mmiwgs . This painting is titled “We are the Land” Indigenous women, grandmothers, mothers, aunties, sisters - we are all connected to this land as are our ancestors. Her hair transforms into water as we are the protectors of water, she wears the markings of the bear paw on her face because she has to be strong and to have courage to defend herself, her family, her culture, her land which is shown below in the hills and tree landscape. The red handprints are there as a constant reminder of the struggles indigenous women face in this country and across turtle island which is represented behind her. The eagle feathers represent love and strength as she strongly stares into the night sky surrounded by her ancestors the stars. We are the land , what has been done to the land continues to be done to our women across the nation . A tribute painting for all our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women .

❤️ NWAC is where the largest part of our donations go from Red Dress sales, and here is why! ❤️

When the National Inquiry into the MMIWG2S+ genocide closed in 2019, it tasked the Government of Canada with creating a National Action Plan to address this crisis. Yet over the course of 5 years, the government has made very little progress.

We refused to wait. In response to the genocide, NWAC created Safe Passage, a community-driven, trauma-informed, and survivor centred initiative designed to track cases of MMIWG2S+ across Canada, monitor ongoing safety concerns, provide safety resources, and educate the public about the MMIWG2S+ genocide year-round. It serves to commemorate and honour our stolen loved ones.

As Red Dress Day approaches, consider taking a look at Safe Passage to learn more about the MMIWG2s+ crisis.
