From beautiful basics to stunning statement pieces, Fibres delivers fashions for both the luxury shopper and the budget-conscious. Fibres carries clothing (and shoes!) for men, women, and children, always 100% sweatshop-free, and ethically made. The focus is on natural fibres, eco-friendly products, and sustainable practices of manufacturing and sourcing. Fibres has a long history of serving Hornb
y Island since 1978. It began as a co-operative of 6 women who made clothing, art, and other handcrafted items. This belief in selling locally-made and Canadian-made products continues under owner Claire Burke, who bought the business in May 2015. Claire was (amongst many things) a social worker in Vancouver, and while she loved it, it was creatively draining. She decided to go into business for herself, and married her social activism with her love of fashion and opened an eco-friendly, sustainable clothing store, Planet Claire (https://www.yelp.ca/biz/planet-claire-sustainable-fashion-vancouver). She also worked as a personal shopper and personal stylist for her Gastown clientele. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47YAcpCa5dM
Fibres carries clothing for both men and women as well as jewellery, local visual art, and home decor. Many products are Canadian and North American-made, supplemented with well-researched imported lines, such as Abaca OMG, who make 100% cotton travel-friendly fashions, manufactured in Mexico; and Echo Verde, who is dedicated to paying women a fair wage in factories that support ethical labour standards and follow environmental policies in China. Local designers will be featured as available, and original artworks by local painter Elaine Savoie.
