Most people drive through Burnaby without stopping. I used to do the same thing.
Turns out Burnaby has one of the most-filmed heritage streetscapes in BC, a lakeside park that's appeared in Yellowjackets, The X-Files, and Virgin River, and a hotel lobby with its own screen credits. All within a manageable day trip from Vancouver.
The centrepiece is Burnaby Village Museum. It's a preserved 1920s main street with hand-painted storefronts and period details that production crews have used to stand in for small towns across North America.
IT (1990), Supernatural, When Calls the Heart, and more have all been filmed here. Walk it slowly. The details are the point.
Deer Lake Park sits right next door and adds a completely different atmosphere.
The boardwalk along the water is quiet, tree-covered, and looks nothing like a suburb. Yellowjackets filmed here. So did The X-Files. It makes sense when you're standing in it.
✨ If you go:
- Allow at least 90 minutes at Burnaby Village Museum, more if you want to ride the 1912 carousel or explore the interurban tram
Deer Lake Park is free and easy to combine with the museum on foot
- Wild Flour Pizza Co. on Bainbridge Ave is worth stopping for lunch, great vegan options
- The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is right next to the park if She's the Man means anything to you
This works well as a standalone day trip from Vancouver or as a first stop before heading further into the Lower Mainland.
It's not the right day if you want somewhere remote or completely outdoors, but if you want heritage, film history, and a bit of nature without a long drive, Burnaby holds up.
Have you ever visited a place specifically because it was filmed there, and found it was worth it for its own reasons too?
