It’s been 12 years since my mom passed away and I miss her as much today as the last time I got to hug her. Many knew her as Shirley Firth the Olympian skier, but I knew her as Mom. I still remember asking her, when I was 15 year old, to tell me what she had actually done? Had she gone to the actual real Olympics? And how many? Cause I needed to know “that stuff” before moving to Canada. I didn’t know not everyone had a poster of their mom on the wall in their homes 😅🤭 it’s still intriguing how she viewed all of that as her past life and focused on the present, on us, on her family! She was the most powerful woman I have ever known and I work everyday to find my own power.

Love you mom ❤️

All my love to the family and many friends of the wonderful Margaret Mary Boulanger. She filled every moment next to her with warmth. Our community, the north will miss her beautiful smile. She cheered so many of us on.

Her service will be today, on Tuesday, April 15th, 2025 at the Co-Cathedral of St. Patrick in Somba K’e [Yellowknife]. The service will begin at noon, with a viewing for the public starting at 11am. Following mass, we will lay her to rest in Lakeview Cemetery.

Afterwards please join us for a reception, feast and drum dance to celebrate Margaret in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly in Somba K’e [Yellowknife] at 5:30pm.

We will have her family gathered to share stories and reflections on the teachings that Margaret imparted on us, with an open mic for the community to share some words.

I released some new handmade jewellery pieces on my website! I had fun working with horn these past couple months. I spent time cutting and shaping the horn to highlight the beauty found within it.

My friend Amos invited me to drive out to the Barren Lands so I could help him fix his trailer and while out there look for caribou parts that were left behind on the land for my work.

So after driving north for 6 -7 hours on the ice road we arrived at MacKay Lake Lodge where we were able to replace the broken spring on his trailer in -35 degree weather which felt more like -45 with the wind chill.

The next day we started early by driving further north to find harvesting sites and gathered many caribou heads for the brains that I need when tanning hides. He helped me by cutting off antlers while I looked around for broken ones in the snow to make jewellery. We found the bottom of caribou legs which I took back to skin and make hide tanning tools. And I found a lot of partial hides that I could only salvaged to use for Caribou tufting because they were already cut up. We put some to***co down to say Mahsi to the Caribou for all the gifts we took back with us.

Every year we see pictures of harvesting sites and sadly all the parts that are left behind on the land so it felt good to be able to go get some and put them to use in my work.

When we started driving back the other spring on the trailer broke, thankfully he had brought a spare one so we drove back to the lodge slowly. This time the wind was deadly while we worked on the trailer feeling more like -55 degrees. We had to be careful not to get frostbit, but manage to get it fixed in under an hour.

On the drive home we saw some caribou in the no hunting zone and a big black wolf on the ice road.

All in all, it was such a good trip and I’m so thankful for my new Baffin winter boots I got from that are rated at -100 degree, my feet stayed warm and toasty the whole time! In the 8th video you can hear the ice road crackling under my feet. It totally made my stomach drop but I reminded myself that way bigger trucks drive on this road.

It was such a pleasure to create the jewellery for my dear friend to attend the Oscars for the movie .

She wanted big earrings for this special night so I beaded and tufted some rose buds using Vintage orange beads to represent Every Children Matters. I included some antique French green steel cut beads and some faceted Carnelian beads. Then I sliced some muskox horn and shaped them to size, then sanded them all down to be as light as possible.

I paired those earrings with a statement ring that was beaded and caribou tufted. She also needed something to attach her eagle feather so I created a hair tie using vintage orange beads, sterling silver and caribou hide.

She wore a beautiful custom gown with a striking cuff and a gorgeous beaded purse.
