Please Stop Stealing Rings Out of Her Jewelry Box

A public service announcement for everyone currently plotting.

We know the move. Wait until she is in the shower, sneak into the jewelry box, grab a ring, trace it on paper, put it back and pray.

Here is the problem. Rings from different fingers are wildly different sizes. Plenty of people have measured a ring off the wrong finger entirely and ended up two full sizes off.

There is a much easier way. Send her in for a "just browsing" visit and we will size her properly and quietly put it on file. Or bring us the ring and we will measure it in about 30 seconds.

Here is a fun thing to check tonight.

Take an inherited diamond and look straight down at it. See a small opening or dark window right in the center, almost like a tiny hole? That is called a culet, and it is a signature of older cutting styles.

Old mine cuts tend to have a softly squared outline and a big obvious culet. Old European cuts are rounder with a smaller one. Modern brilliants usually come to a sharp point with no visible opening at all.

It is one of the quickest ways to guess whether a stone is antique or modern. And it feels a little like finding a secret.

This statistic makes us laugh every single time.

About half of people who proposed were CONVINCED their partner had no idea it was coming. Only about a third of the people being proposed to agreed.

So roughly one in five proposers is out there thinking they pulled off the heist of the century while she has known for six weeks and already told her sister.

When someone inherits jewelry they will not wear, they usually think there are two options: keep it in a drawer, or get rid of it.

There are actually four, and they solve completely different problems.

PRESERVE it as is, because it matters historically or to the family.
RESTORE it, so it is safe and beautiful and wearable again.
REDESIGN it into something you will genuinely wear.
SELL it intact, so the piece survives with someone who loves it.

None of these is the noble choice and none is the shameful one. They just answer different questions.

The average person now visits FIVE different jewelers before buying, up from about two just a couple of years ago. They look at around 15 designs. And 71 percent say seeing it in person really matters.

Some stores hate that. We love it.

Go look. Compare. Ask hard questions. Ask us the hard questions. Then notice who actually explained things to you versus who just pushed the thing with the best margin.

Before electric light was everywhere, diamonds were cut by hand to look their best in candlelight and lamplight. That meant bigger, chunkier facets designed to throw broad flashes of fire rather than the tight rapid sparkle we associate with modern stones.
