The Watch Crown: A Small Component with Big Responsibilities
The watch crown, also known as the winding crown, is a crucial element of any timepiece. Located on the side of the watch case mostly at 3H or 4H, it allows wearers to set the time, date, and complications, while also winding the manual movement to ensure smooth operation.

However, this small yet essential part presents a significant technical challenge, particularly in terms of water resistance. Over the years, watchmakers have innovated through research and patents to enhance durability and performance.
Certain models, like Moby Dick and Sowar 2000, incorporate a screw-down crown, preventing accidental unlocking—an essential feature for diver’s watches. Historically, oversized crowns were also developed to allow operation even with gloves.
