Barbados is the most easterly island in the Caribbean — a flat coral-limestone island where almost every hotel, port, and highway sits a few hundred metres from the sea. Salt spray, seawater, and a rising ocean attack its concrete from every side, and on a water-scarce island the cost of failure is steep. Microsilica (silica fume) is the answer: its ultra-fine particles densify the paste and close off the pores, slowing chloride ingress, sealing out seawater, and pushing strength high enough for seawalls, ports, desalination plants, and coastal resorts. We break down how it works and where it's applied.
