Fifteen years ago, I wrote about Mukuni Village in my Master’s coursework. I never imagined I would return to build its future.

Mukuni has a rich craft heritage. My question was simple:
Could these existing craft skills be transferred into contemporary jewellery manufacturing?

At the time, it was an academic idea. A possibility on paper.

Then the work began.

In April 2025, Design Thinking Africa signed an MOU with Mukuni Development Trust to work towards transforming the historic Mukuni Lower Primary School into the Mukuni Goldsmith & Lapidary Atelier.

With support from MEJURI, we developed a Goldsmithing & Jewellery Manufacturing curriculum, approved by TEVETA in December 2025.

The idea was becoming a real pathway for people to develop skills in goldsmithing, gemstone cutting and jewellery manufacturing, building on Mukuni’s existing craft heritage.

Then I discovered something I could never have planned.

The school we are now working to transform was built in 1912. It was also where my late father started Grade 1. He had been sent to Mukuni to live with relatives so he could attend school.

I later learned that Chief Mukuni, together with many other dignitaries, also began their primary education here. So sitting with Chief Mukuni, discussing the future of this place, felt deeply significant. This is bigger than a building.

It is about taking existing knowledge and creating pathways to new technical skills, livelihoods and opportunities.

The old school once created pathways into education.

We are working to create another kind of pathway:

From craft heritage to jewellery manufacturing.
From knowledge to technical skills.
From skills to opportunity.

Fifteen years ago, I wrote the idea down.

Today, I am standing inside it.

And somehow, my father was already there.

Long before I knew my work would bring me back.

Perhaps that is what legacy looks like.

Not simply preserving where we have come from, but building from it.

From Copenhagen, where I design, to Mukuni, where craft, heritage and knowledge meet, this is the bridge I have been building.

And this time, it feels like I have come home. 🤍🇩🇰🇿🇲

The Brilliance of a Dream: She's one of our newest trainees on the Lapidary Atelier program, learning to read a gemstone's story through a jeweller's loupe.

Fifteen years of work has led to this moment. Our Diploma in Goldsmithing and Jewellery Manufacturing Programme has received TEVETA curriculum approval. Now we move to implementation, where young women from extractive communities will gain internationally recognised qualifications in gemstone cutting and goldsmithing.

Two years ago I stood in one of Copenhagen’s oldest goldsmith ateliers for a photoshoot with . I was simply a designer with a dream. On 1 October 2025 I returned to the very same atelier, now the home of INONGE ZITA, where I will be crafting one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces. I am smiling because this is a true full circle moment, and I am grateful to work in my favorite city and home away from home, “Wonderful Copenhagen.”

INONGE ZITA is now offering by-appointment-only consultations in our Copenhagen atelier. I am looking forward getting behind the bench and creating one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces that honour responsible sourcing, enduring craftsmanship, and heirloom quality. Zambia is experiencing a remarkable surge in gold discoveries. With this growing opportunity comes an urgent responsibility: to ensure safer, more sustainable mining practices for artisanal and small-scale miners.

Three years ago, our founder, Patricia Inonge Mweene, collaborated with renowned Danish ore geologist Peter W. U.
