Ok, I’ll be honest, the boys had a LOT to write about. They’d just experienced their first Turkish bath and were still all shiny clean when we stumbled across this little local café.

The owner didn’t speak English, we didn’t speak Turkish, but he immediately brought out ice creams for the boys and pointed at a few things on the menu that we should try. We nodded, he went off to cook, his kid came out, two cats came to investigate us a bit more, and the boys got stuck into their Zwela journals while we sipped on tea.

One of those completely unexpected, lovely little travel moments that you couldn’t have planned if you tried. And honestly, those are often the moments you remember most.

We’ve travelled extensively all over South Africa, but creating the Northern Cape pages for Zwela made us realise there were parts we’d only really passed through, and they definitely needed more exploring!

So we did what any curious traveller would do… we hit the open road!

Big skies, dusty roads, wild landscapes, tiny towns and plenty of incredible sunrises and sunsets. What a place!!

Team Zwela originates from South Africa, so how did we spend Heritage Day? 🇿🇦

One went looking for nature and adventure. 🌿
The other put on springbok socks, found some super cool SA art and fired up the braai.

45 minutes watching lions mating gave us a LOT to talk about. 😂🦁

Now back home, and it’s still a family conversation. Definitely made the top ten sightings of our Kgalagadi safari.

One thing we kept commenting on with our sightings in Kgalagadi was how incredibly relaxed the animals were. They weren’t camera shy at all - in most cases, they hung around long enough to give everyone a good view.

Well… these guys were total ex**********ts. 😂

We started Zwela because we kept noticing the same thing on our adventures: the bits we remembered years later weren’t necessarily always the big, impressive moments.

They were the weird little things. The unexpected detours. The questions that sent us down a rabbit hole. The things the kids spotted that we’d completely missed.

That’s the bit we’re interested in.

Not making every trip educational. Not making every moment meaningful. Just leaving a little more room for curiosity, adventure and noticing what’s right in front of you.

So, this is a little look at why we do what we do.
