Baubles/Beads in process. Like so many things, they are easy but time consuming to make. I am not sure if I prefer the tarnished look of the slightly darkened finish or the brighter cuts that will naturally patina over time. The 18K washers are engraved on the independent straight line machine and the guilloché on the silver is from the rose engine.

Now for something new and different, here are a pair of prototype earrings I have tentatively named “Hemispherings”. These baubles are constructed from two Sterling Silver/925 discs that are engraved and then connected by a flared tube that also holds 18K/750 yellow gold engraved discs to create a little more pizzaz and finished with 18K/750 yellow gold ear wires based with a 22K/918 yellow gold bead. The legendary enamelist Barbara Minor taught me this technique of connecting domes to make beads. They are made with love and not yet on my web shop but available on request. DM for price!

The automatic brocade engine or in French, "la machine à graver faire gravure ramolayé" stands at the head of the class here at the Musée de la Boîte de Montre. This one is a Lienhard made just down the road in La Chaux de Fonds around the turn of the 20th century. The word “ramolayé” is specific to a type of engraving that is often done by hand on watch parts in three dimensions. It applies here because the “master” or “maître” disc for the brocade engine will very often be a large “ramolayé” three dimensional sculpture. The machine duplicates the master pattern and engraves it in two dimensions that have a very 3 dimensional appearance to the viewer.

Before Covid, what seems like a lifetime ago, I started the Mandala Ring series which became a daunting project. Six patterns with twelve choices of gems including the choice of no gem. This means 72 unique combinations are possible. Scrolling down the feed, you will see at least one of each. I will continue to post them because I love them and I love to make them. I conclude the initial presentation here with the Circle of 12 set with Citrine nestled on top of Mother of Pearl and surrounded by a 750/18K bezel. Followers who have read previous posts know the Circle of 12 was the signature pattern for my mentor and teacher, the late Gorst Duplessis.

What more to say about the trinity pattern that forms the Triad pattern of the mandala rings? This is the final version presented with Grape Chalcedony set in 18K/750 yellow gold. Scrolling down through my feed, you will count 12 versions of the Triad with various gem stones and with no stones.

The 4/4 or Common time signature requires a conductor to trace a specific pattern with the baton. This pattern reminds me of that pattern the baton traces up then down then left and right over and over again. Here the 12th and last combination available in the Quartet pattern is presented complimented with the yummy deep green Chrysoprase from Marlborough, Australia set in 18K/750 gold.

This honey colored citrine sitting on top of a slice of 18K/750 Palladium white gold and set in a 18K/750 yellow Gold Bezel is a modern take on a three count rosette designed by the late Dale Chase. I never got the chance to meet Mr. Chase but I find his rosette designs present the opportunity to show off the rose engine’s capabilities from a fresh perspective.

Back at the jewel box of a time machine that is the Musée de la Boîte de Montre we see that many of the machines are single operation and many are multi-operation. This single operation machine uses a cutter for milling a flat surface in a watchcase for the creation of a hinge. I think about lockets that were being created at around the same time and imagine there is a very good possibility many lockets were created using the same machines at around the same time period, if not in the same shops. The watch cases and perhaps the lockets as well would then be decorated with engraving via a brocade engine, guilloché, hand engraved, or a combination of these three and often vitreous enamel. The number of variations is infinite.

Purple Sage Chalcedony is mined in Nevada and is a fair trade level 1 stone. The natural purple color is confectionary in its visual appeal. Set upon a slice of natural mother of pearl and nestled in its 18K/750 yellow gold bezel, here it sits in the center of the triangular “Triad” pattern.

A soft 12 pointed star in this “Circle of 12” pattern is classic. It invokes the 12 signs of the zodiac, the 12 hours in the day, the 12 months of the year, the system of counting in 12’s called the dozenal or duodecimal… does all that matter? It is a beautiful pattern. Here it is presented with a Blue Topaz set on top of 18K/750 palladium white gold that is guilloché engraved and wrapped in an 18K/750 yellow gold bezel.

Steps, Steps, Steps…. To make a watch case from scratch one needs to do a lot of metal forming. Like jewelers of the same period, watch case makers employed tools such as ingot molds, the rolling mill, draw bench, disc cutter, screw press, bench shear and others to form and coax the metal into repeatable shapes for production work.

Here is a little gallery of tools that will be familiar to any metal artist. All of it is set up and appears ready to use at the the time machine that is the Musée de la Boîte de Montre in Noirmont, Switzerland.
