The Bat Warden’s Son (A Little Moose Origin Story, by James)
Bats have always held a special place in my heart. Long before I was designing jewellery, my dad was a bat warden in the south of England. This meant my childhood evenings were spent counting roosts and, more often than not, rehabilitating tiny, winged patients.
Yes, there was a real-life 'Bat Phone'. And yes, it was so long ago that it was a landline. Alas, there was no bat signal beamed into the sky, but we can't have it all.
Many of our guests arrived after losing a scrap with a neighbourhood cat. We did our best to give them a five-star recovery; we even fashioned tiny wing splints out of plasters and cocktail sticks for the ones who needed a little extra support.
It wasn’t all splints and bandages, though. There were happier endings - pregnant mums giving birth in our care to teeny tiny, pink, bald and blind babies and the lucky few who just needed a few days of R&R before flying home. I’ll never forget the Long-Eared bat who decided our living room was the perfect temporary Airbnb before he was strong enough to head back into the night.
These tiny creatures are absolute marvels. Some weigh as little as 5g and are no longer than a ten-year-old’s pinky finger. They are a joy, a wonder, and the original inspiration behind our own little winged creations.
Happy International Bat Appreciation Day!
✨Our Long-Eared Bat Necklace is my tribute to that little houseguest. Lovingly handmade from layers of pearl acrylic with a sprinkling of crystals, he’s designed to echo-locate his way into your jewellery collection✨
