‘Beetroot Stone’ is a nickname given to this British Jurassic fossil which is descended from calcareous red algae that functioned as an important reef-building organism during the Palaeozoic era. Though it is widely accepted as an alga, recent studies propose that it should be reclassified as a chaetetid sea sponge. This specimen shows exceptional preservation of boron-containing organic pigments, borolithochromes, that are responsible for the distinct pink colouration. The banding is thought to be a record of growing seasons.
