Many motorcycle mechanics really struggle to rebuild these Sachs 2 stroke motors. For example, we always change Paw and Ratchet spring part 1T.5 B.173 Jumping out of fourth gear issues for example. A general selection of gearbox and crank shims is suggested along with new piston rings.
We always replace the crankshaft bearings with new C3 tolerance and new type seals which sit on an unworn portion of the crank journal pin.

Sunday 26th April 2026. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) launched national Drive it Day back in 2005 and for many this event marks the start of the historic vehicle driving season. Charity donations to National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to raise funds for its Childline service, focussed around Drive it Day.

Spare Chaincase service / exchange fitted.
Remove original chaincase with defective 60-year-old rubber donuts, we noted that the thick rectangular tab washers had been moved to the engine frame side of the suspension element in a failed attempt to correct ride height, even then it was a tail dragger low rear ride height.
Step #1 remove engine cowling, #2 remove Sachs motor for overhaul and step #3 install service exchange chaincase fitted with new rubber suspension elements.
It sure is a lot easier to have a spare workshop overhaul chaincase ready to install.

Aero silver Met 579M is an original colour used by FMR and we have an unrestored Kr200 in this paint scheme for reference. However, there is no paint mix formula available for this mid shade silver also it could not be cross referenced with BASF.

FMR was an early user of new metallic paint technologies that became available in the late 1950s introducing four shades. UV protection and clear coat processes were not in place then and the aero silver deteriorated very quickly when exposed to UV and air pollution.

The paint shop in Northwest England was not able to resolve the original shade with their high-tech scanner from an unrestored wing so we did it from colour chip slides and 5ltrs of Mitsubishi U27 light grey (has a small amount of silver) was mixed cost at a substantial expense £311.64 including 1ltr of winter 2K thinners.

We are particularly pleased with the finished result that is as near as possible to the original aero silver Met 579M.

Several Kr200’s have been observed in the last few years at rallies with a modern bright metallic finish and whilst this paint is very reasonably priced and readily available from eBay for example it doesn’t seem to be in our opinion a correct 1950’s 60’s period finish for a valuable 1962 Kr200

Crankshaft seal sits on an unworn portion of the journal crankpin.

Main bearing seal - replaces Sachs #0687 006 000 (pair) installation on the crank which had excessive run-out, satisfactory progress this week in our workshop engine jig
A completely new innovative design using a new seal housing with a modern high temperature seal insert. New type seals can be replaced without stripping the engine replaces the original seal a new low friction type.
This is a significant advantage but may not be necessary as the new type seal material is much more durable than the original Sachs type. It is a simple matter to prise out the old seal and replace with a new one.

Today at Schmittparts… Just back from the crankshaft specialist in Northwest England. This crank had excessive run-out to the extent that it caused the armature flywheel to touch the stator. It looks like some past owner has fitted a new conrod without the correct alignment fixture. Although alignment fixtures are sold on eBay, it takes considerable skill and experience to know where to hit it with a hammer. Yes, that is normal procedure and takes seconds for the experienced technician.

We always check the crankshaft run out after fitting new main bearings. Measuring with a dial test indicator on the smooth part of the shaft near the cam and again just before the Dynastart taper. www.schmittparts.co.uk free technical support on WhatsApp +44 7482 314636 🤓

New type part #1339 Brake Drum (10mm stud) £119.00 each. This part will restore your brakes to new standard since the braking surface is new and free of scoring. Suits all Messerschmitts from chassis number 72166 (late 1959 build date) with 10mm wheel studs. Important Note: For efficient, and even braking, new parts should be fitted to both sides. We also stock a new ribbed 8mm drum and used drums in near new condition for all Messerschmitts up to chassis number 72165 with 8mm wheel studs.
