KELPI Studio

KELPI Studio Kelpi takes inspiration from the washed up pebbles on the shoreline to the characterful seaweeds growing amongst the barnacle and lichen lined rock pools.

We sell joyful prints, one of a kind jewellery and home accessories. All designed in house.

Revisit…
These snippets are taken from 2021 when Kelpi was just an idea in my head - not even named Kelpi yet. I just started sketching ideas from nature, started a jewellery course and just stuck to what inspired me most - it always came from nature and it still does! I didn’t know where it would lead me to and now Kelpi Studio has been going for almost 5 years!

I’ve enjoyed looking back and love the playfulness of those initial sketches out and about. It’s giving me new ideas even 5 years on!

How is it made?

I make lots of different things so there are lots of processes but here’s a snippet of how my little seaweed studs are made in silver.

I hand cut them out (when in brass they are laser cut), file them, hammer them, solder, file some more, polish then finish!

In a nutshell :)

If you like the look of my brass seaweed collection but you’d like them in silver give me a shout!

Running Kelpi Studio comes with many wins and challenges. I cope being my own boss but it’s not easy!

- The financial unknown can be very tiring as it varies month to month.

- I love exploring and learning but when the business is going well it’s hard to find time for creative play.

- when the business is quiet, it can be hard to find the motivation or kick start a new project.

- I love being part of and other creative communities. It’s invaluable meeting other creatives, sharing experience and knowledge and just cheering each other its priceless.

- I love the collaboration opportunities out there and working with like minded people.

- I enjoy meeting customers at markets and sharing our passion for nature. Always learning something new along the way.

- I find it hard to pace myself. I say yes to so many things when the business is quiet but then this road to overwhelm and burnout later down the line - I’m getting better at pausing and pacing but it’s something I am constantly working on.

In the detail
A very late post but better late than never!

This is one of my sea fan studies using indigo ink. These structural forms led me to my flow state. A state of calm, repetitive make making and focus.

Who is it for?

Kelpi Studio was created for those who are curious about the natural world. It is a playful collection of my own experience but is also there to inspire others to nurture their own curiosity with the world around them.

What am I working on?

March has become very busy and i’m trying to stay calm whilst everything seems to happen all at once! It’s a good problem to have as there are months where things get very quiet - it’s a hard balance but calm is key whichever way it is. Holding onto calm…

1 &2 various freelance print design projects - designing prints for tiles, fashion accessories and board games - what a selection!
3. Wholesale order for a very exciting new stockist in London!
4. Designing new shop layout (excuse dodgy screen photo!)
5. Starting a new painting commission… note to self - get canvas this weekend….

Why do I make?

I simply love the feeling of creating something with my hands. It feels satisfying, resourceful and primitive. Humans have been making objects since…well, a long time ago, so it’s no wonder people still get satisfaction from creating. It doesn’t have to go right all the time either. Some of the best things happen when we make mistakes or try something out of our comfort zone! I was a full time print designer when I started learning silversmithing - it’s something I had never really tired before but I craved learning something new with my hands. I tried going to pottery classes for a few years earlier - I was terrible but I absolutely LOVED making and the community aspect of it - going to a class, meeting people, having a giggle and potentially making a useful object (sometimes) ! I’d love to hear why other people make!

What do I make?

Being a designer maker, this comes with all kinds of answers! One day I’ll be at the bench making jewellery and the next I will be hand painting a print design for Kelpi’s next collection or for a freelance client.
It’s not easy juggling all this alongside the admin, marketing, planning and general life stuff but it is a path that is possible for lots of creative minds out there!
Making time for bringing ideas to life is one of the hardest things whilst keeping everything else going but it’s still so important for me to play around until I paint or make something I like!

How do you make time for creative play??

Trial and error - I’m always up for trying new things and learning as I go. This recent commission helped me learn a new skill in punching letters and numbers into the silver. I thought it would be easy but alas, it didn’t go as planned! I quite like the wonkiness of the first one but I did do it again to improve the spacing and straightness. I really believe curiosity is such a key in all aspects of life - it’s so important to learn more from (even from the mistakes), ask questions along the way and see where it leads…

Behind the scenes this week!

Every week is different for Kelpi but I’ve some little commissions come in amongst the wholesale flurry from the beginning of the year.
I’ve been going for early morning walks (we actually saw the sun for the first time in what feels like a decade!). These little bursts of fresh air help me stay motivated as I work from home a lot which can be distracting!
Each day starts with a cuppa to help me through the admin - emails, marketing, reaching out to stockists etc etc.
It then goes into the fun part of making or designing prints (whatever I have on that week). The chaos builds on my desk but it’s a reminder of what I have to do!
This is just a little snippet of yesterday but like I said every day is different!

It’s and I almost missed the first post!
I’m Kareni and I run Kelpi Studio. After print designing in the fashion and heritage industry for 7 years I decided to go solo and begin my self employed creative career in 2021. I design and make brass and recycled silver jewellery for the Kelpi collection. I also design prints and stationery using seaweed paper - yes paper made from seaweed! This can all be found on my website. I’m also a surface pattern designer always looking to collaborate with brands where values align. In the past I have worked with Seasalt, National Trust and the Ashmolean museum to name a few. I also work more regularly as a freelance designer for Decorum Tiles. There’s lots to juggle but I enjoy being a designer/ maker / founder - just a few hats to wear!
