A piece of football and Ulster history on the bench today- a watch made by Steel & Sons, Belfast.

This watch was made in 1888 by the same company that sponsored the creation of the Steel & Sons Cup, a major fixture of the County Antrim & District FA since its inception in 1895.

Steel & Sons Ltd was a major jeweller, watchmaker, optician and wholesaler. When this watch was produced in 1888 Belfast had just been granted city status, and the company’s address on Royal Avenue must have been one of the most prestigious in all of this bustling metropolis. After 137 years it is still going strong like the city that birthed it!

Homegrown horology made in Larne!

Excited to begin restoration work on this silver pocket watch made in Larne c1893. Po***ck Bros began trading in 1892, and only closed their doors in 2021! The old shop still stands empty on Larne Main Street after nearly 130 years in the community.

This watch is a rare early signed example, and will be treated with the respect it deserves as a survivor from busy, bustling Victorian Larne in its heyday.

Work completed on these gorgeous carriage clocks from the Victorian era! 😃

These decorative clocks were originally designed to travel in a carriage along with their well-heeled owners, but now they ready to be displayed and admired on a mantle piece as features in their own right.

Both received a complete overhaul to get them working reliably. This involves:

Complete disassembly and inspection of every part
Replacing any worn bushings (clock term for bearings)
Polishing working pivot surfaces
Polishing all visible
Re-silvering where original silver plating was worn off
Making a new minute hand from scratch
Making new custom taper pins to hold mechanical parts together (screws are used less than you think in antique clockwork)
Cleaning every part ultrasonically and by hand
Re-assembly with multiple types of Swiss greases and oils
Thorough testing and inspection after assembly

And yes, it did take many, many hours of polishing to get them this shiny 😂 we have put a protective coating of museum grade wax on the brass parts to keep them looking good for years to come.

Take a minute and admire the craftsmanship from over 120 years ago!

Giving a Victorian carriage clock a helping hand!

Parts for a 120 year old French carriage clock are very hard to find, so to replace the broken minute hand a new one had to be made from scratch.

The new hand was made from a section of clock mainspring, the pattern traced then cut out, filed and polished. Finally, the new hand was heat treated to colour match the hour hand and fitted to the clock.

A nice way to finish off the restoration work done to this beautiful clock.

A little bit of Americana on the bench today- an Elgin pocket watch dating all the way back to 1883.
Perhaps “little” is the wrong word as the case is nearly 4 ounces of silver!!

Rugged, reliable, and designed to survive in the Wild West, this hardy pioneer will soon be ready for his next 140 years

Work continues on this WW1 “trench” watch…

Although it has no military supply number, it looks and feels like it was definitely made for military service even if it never made it to the trenches.

I will keep working and see what secrets I can unearth 🤓

Before and after shots of a little ladies pocket watch from 1912. The original glass enamel has been chipped out the image lost over the last 111 years.

I was able to find traces of the original colour scheme and recreate it: a beautiful dragonfly, peony and 3 tiny poppy buds have emerged.

This was my first time trying enamelling, and although it’s not perfect it is totally reversible and hopefully conveys some of the original artist’s intentions.

The whole watch measures just over 33mm, so a dainty piece to be sure!

A World War 1 relic on the bench today!

This fantastic “trench watch” dates to 1917, and is a true piece of history. Given that it’s in one piece it probably never made it to the trenches, but a black dial and glow in the dark hands made it ideal for a serving soldier.

We’ll see if we can get it ready for another 106 years of faithful service.
