Edinburgh College of Art is closing all 90 remaining craft and making courses at the college... all its workshop/studio courses including its jewellery courses.
Please sign the petition I've attached to this note. There has been an upwelling of support and national response to these closures.... please join the throng. In our diverse creative communities we recognise the importance of these courses. They have helped shape our cultural heritage and shape the future, the careers of countless students that have studied at Edinburgh have helped shaped the creative landscape of Britain
In Britain we punch way above our weight in the arts sector, in film theatre, music, design, in material based design, jewellery , ceramics , furniture....in fine art, painting and sculpture... this is because we have an education system that nurtures creativity in studios and workshops brimming with expertise and equipment. In the past it was understood that to create innovation you need to have time and space to experiment... in the creative equivalent of a laboratory.... the studio or workshop.
We are in danger of loosing so many skills through this loss, not just the heritage skills nurtured in art schools and the loss of material knowledge passed through the hands of the lecturers to their students. We will loose critical thinking and thinkers. Creative students need more space to learn, more than a student who needs only a laptop to complete their studies. The arts sector in the UK is bigger than the financial sector, yet , it is the financial sector making these choices. Art Colleges run by businessmen. The number crunchers see the maths with no vision...no future and no understanding of how their loss will diminish British culture.
I think that Art colleges should never have been defunded by the Government. That they are run as Businesses in the UK is abhorrent.... when STEM subjects are seen as more important and still have government funding. To have the arts fully funded, as they were, is a dream and another battle, but for now we fight for Edinburgh, let the government know how important it is that these courses are saved.

Goldsmiths' Fair - fine jewellery & contemporary silver starts on Monday evening with a private view , on Tuesday it’s open to the public. I’ll be there with some new work including these pieces . I’ve been carving onyx and banded agates over the Summer. This is a continuation and exploration of the skills I learned with while I was a QEST scholar. I’m very slowly adding pieces to a collection named Sulis. Sulis was a local West Country Celtic deity , a Sun goddess worshiped at the thermal spring in what is now the city of Bath. A goddess of wisdom and light.A protecting water spirit . She was adopted by the Romans and incorporated into their pantheon of deities. But for me she represents a divine presence, healing and a protector of life. Each of the pieces in this collection has a representation of an animal.. a portrait. Cameos were in the past either images of gods and monsters, grandee’s and, great beauties .. in this collection of Cameos , nature is central, not the vanity of humankind . I’ve hijacked the artform to write large the fragility of nature. Nature as spirit, as life .
I’ve also been working on some new Pietra Dura pieces … inlaying stone into stone using found British hardstones. Jasper and Flints . .. such slow painstaking work !
The Fair opens on Tuesday at 11am .. then daily from 11am - 6.30pm ( last entry 6pm ) Tuesday -
Saturday with early closing on Sunday 27th at 4.30pm ( last entry 4pm )

New findings show that the industry could cut emissions by 30% through circularity, while unworn gold and silver sit unused in consumer collections

Dorset Museum & Art Gallery is my local museum and somewhere I have deep affection for. I spent a lot of time there as a kid . I was a dedicated member of their young archaeologists club from age 11 in the 1970’s which led me to my first ever archaeological dig at Dewlish Roman Villa not far from Dorchester for two Summers as a young teenager. It started a lifelong interest in our material culture and technology. The museum currently is exhibiting some of its most precious objects in an exhibition about Treasure. I was delighted to see the Clandon Hoard , a gold lozenge and black/ gold mace head ..found in the Clandon Barrow…plus the incredible engraved Celtic Mirror which fascinated me as a child with other burial goods from the tomb of a Durotrigian women , her Roman stater coin , stamped with four horses .. pierced and repurposed as a pendant and her Roman glass beads . .. and from another local hoard a solid gold object , a lunular necklace .. Dorset is replete with prehistory.. all these found within spitting distance of my home.
