The ride home after a very long day…
Sometimes that’s when you remember why we ride.

Find the beauty in the world around you.
Riding a motorcycle isn’t just going through the motions β€” you become part of your surroundings.

The smell of the woodlands.
The scent of tarmac and diesel on the road.
The warmth of the sun through your visor.

Take it all in.
Process it.
Enjoy the ride.

Because motorcycling is more than transport… it’s an experience.

RIP Alan Oversby

The Classic Racing Motorcycle Club (CRMC) and Southern 100 organizers have confirmed the death of veteran classic road racer Alan Oversby, aged 68, following an incident on Sunday, 24 May 2026.
The accident occurred on the second lap of the 400cc race during the Pre-TT Classic Road Races on the 4.25-mile Billown Circuit in the Isle of Man. The location of the incident was on the approach to the Ballakeighan section of the course.
Mr. Oversby, a resident of Bolton-le-Sands, was a professional engineer. His technical background directly informed his participation in classic motorcycle racing, where he was recognized for the preparation and maintenance of his own machinery. He had been an active competitor within the CRMC paddock for more than twenty years.
His racing career at the Billown Circuit began in 2005, with his first victory recorded in 2006. Over two decades of competition, he accumulated 16 wins at the venue. Earlier on the afternoon of 24 May, he had secured victories in both the 350cc and 500cc classic races.

Many riders ask why advanced systems like RoSPA are often viewed more highly than standard licence training through the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

The answer is simple:

The DVSA system is designed to help riders reach the minimum legal standard required to ride safely and independently on UK roads.

That is not criticism β€” it is its purpose.

CBT, Module 1 and Module 2 are there to:
🏍 Teach basic machine control
🏍 Build core road awareness
🏍 Ensure legal compliance
🏍 Create a rider capable of passing a test safely

But passing a test does not automatically create an experienced rider.

Many riders pass with:

* Very limited saddle time
* Little poor-weather experience
* Limited hazard perception development
* Minimal cornering confidence
* Little understanding of advanced roadcraft

This is why so many bikers say:

β€œYou learn to pass the test… then you truly learn to ride afterwards.”

Advanced riding organisations such as RoSPA focus on something very different.

Using police-style Roadcraft principles, the aim becomes:
βœ… Reading hazards earlier
βœ… Better positioning and observation
βœ… Smoother, safer riding
βœ… Planning ahead constantly
βœ… Reducing risk before danger develops
βœ… Building long-term riding skill and confidence

The mindset changes from:
❌ β€œHow do I pass?”
to
βœ… β€œHow do I become a better, safer rider for life?”

That is why many experienced riders, instructors, IAM members, police riders and track riders value advanced training so highly.

The reality is:
A licence is only the beginning of rider development β€” not the end of it.

The roads are busier, bikes are faster, distractions are everywhere, and new riders are often expected to cope with extremely demanding environments very quickly.

Continuous development matters.

The best riders never stop learning. 🏍️πŸ”₯

🏍️ Why Riders Wear Ear Plugs 🏍️

Wearing ear plugs on a motorcycle is not about blocking out the world β€” it’s about protecting your hearing, reducing fatigue, and improving focus.

Many riders don’t realise that inside a motorcycle helmet, wind noise alone can regularly exceed 85-100 dB, especially at motorway speeds. Studies have shown noise levels inside helmets can reach over 100 dB at around 70mph+, which is enough to contribute to permanent hearing damage and tinnitus over time.

The biggest culprit often isn’t the exhaust…
It’s the constant turbulent wind noise around the helmet.

Why riders use ear plugs:

β€’ Protect long-term hearing
β€’ Reduce rider fatigue and mental exhaustion
β€’ Improve concentration and focus
β€’ Help prevent tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
β€’ Reduce sensory overload on long rides
β€’ Create a calmer riding environment
β€’ Allow riders to hear important sounds more clearly by reducing harmful background wind roar

Good quality motorcycle ear plugs don’t completely block sound. You can still hear sirens, horns, engines, intercoms and traffic β€” they mainly reduce the damaging high-frequency wind noise. Research has found helmets alone do not provide enough protection against harmful noise exposure.

Think of it like this:
We wear helmets to protect our heads…
Ear plugs help protect what’s inside them.

Hearing damage is permanent.
Protect it early. πŸ‘‚πŸοΈ
