‘London Fog’ by comes out tomorrow for Record Store Day by . I’ve never listened to it before. To be totally honest I didn’t really know much about it. Before The Doors became famous they were a house band at a dive bar called London Fog on the Sunset Strip. They recorded this album live from that very bar in 1966. It’s definitely worth hearing a pre-album version of ‘Strange Days’ and a very early version of ‘You Make Me Real’ plus some cool blues covers like B.B. King’s ‘Rock Me.’ I don’t own my live albums but I love the story behind this one and I like the arty artwork too. @ London, United Kingdom

Another brick in the wall (of my bathroom).

Not my favourite Pink Floyd album but it’s definitely nice to have in the collection. Although it is a hefty double vinyl with 26 songs so there’s a lot to spin through. But one of those tracks is ‘Comfortably Numb’ which is obviously a classic. The Wall tour that followed the album sounded epic. It involved a 40-foot high wall of cardboard bricks being torn down on the stage. I’m still yet to see the film - heard it is pretty good though.

Not only is ‘The Boxer’ one of the best albums ever but ‘Fake Empire’ is also one of the best songs ever. Those first few piano chords hit me every time. Then followed by some unforgettable lyrics:

“Tiptoe through our shiny city / With our diamond slippers on / Do our gay ballet on ice, bluebirds on our shoulders / We’re half awake in a fake empire.”

I’m so obsessed with this album that the weekend just gone I made my 21 week pregnant wife listen to it in full so my baby’s first use of its ears will hear Berninger’s beautiful baritone. I know, not the happiest album to expose to a baby but I will play some early Beatles next week to balance it out.

Anyway this album was the last chance for The National. The band were ready to call it a day if this album wasn’t a success. So glad it was. I could write a short dissertation on each song especially after listening to podcast which literally has an episode on each track. But I won’t. I will tell you that the string and horn arrangements are absolute genius especially on ‘Mistaken for Strangers’. ‘Ada’ is stunning (with Sufjan Stevens on piano). ‘Brainy’, ‘Squalor Victoria’ and ‘Slow Show’ get a big mention but ‘Green Gloves’ is one of those tracks that stays with you. Confession: I first heard this track watching ‘One Tree Hill’ back in the day and I was hooked there and then. Long story short I love this album.

Ahhhhhhhhh!

50th birthday coming up later this year for this insane album. You would never guess that ‘In the court of the Crimson King’ was actually their debut. King Crimson ignored the trends and combined experimental jazz with rock riffs to found a new genre called prog rock.

‘21st Century Schizoid Man’ gets into such an intense jazz freak out that you forget what you are listening to. It’s unbelievable.

The artwork is terrifying. It was a painting of the Schizoid Man from the song painted by a computer programmer, called Barry Godber. It was the one and only album cover he ever did. This cover makes me feel uncomfortable, scared and mesmerised. The band agreed that this captured the mood of the album.

Flying low.

Sticky Fingers is the whole package. Not just because Richards and Jagger nailed the riffs and vocals to absolute perfection but because Andy Warhol also created one of the most iconic album covers in history. Oh yeah, ‘Brown Sugar’ has got to be one the best album openers ever too, right?
