It’s all about hammer control! ⚒️

I took part in one of these workshops, and firstly, it’s incredible how you can control the movement of the metal when you understand what hammer to use and where to strike the metal. And secondly, there is such instant satisfaction when this flat piece you’ve been working on suddenly opens into a stunning 3D form!

This is a technique called fold forming was pioneered by Charles Lewton-Brain during the 1980’s. We were lucky to have Charles come and visit us for a day a few years ago to teach bench trick and tips, it was quite fascinating and he also snuck in a quick fold forming demonstration.

Our next workshop is coming up very soon on Saturday 17 October led by the very talented and we have a couple of places left.

We asked each of the designers in our current Moby Dick showcase to sum up their work in just one word.

Not an easy task when a jewellery practice can be shaped by years of making, materials, techniques, influences, ideas and personal experience.

But sometimes one word can tell you a surprising amount.

Swipe through to discover the words our designers chose, then come and see how those ideas translate into the jewellery itself at FORGE.

Our Moby Dick showcase brings together 16 independent jewellers, each with a very different approach to making, from bold sculptural forms and richly textured metals to remarkable gemstones, traditional techniques and strong connections to nature, landscape and the sea.

📆 Open until 23 October
⏰ Monday to Friday, 10am–6pm
📍 FORGE, 59 Leather Lane, London EC1N 7TJ

I find this decision genuinely shocking🤯👇

Edinburgh College of Art has announced the closure of its remaining undergraduate craft disciplines, including Jewellery & Silversmithing. At a time when individuals, organisations and companies across the UK are working so hard to protect, teach and champion specialist skills and craftsmanship, it feels completely out of step.

FORGE itself was created because I believe these skills matter, that makers need places to learn and develop, and that specialist knowledge must be passed on rather than allowed to disappear.

We are living through a period increasingly shaped by AI, automation and the intangible, while at the same time seeing a growing appreciation for the handmade, material knowledge and human skills that cannot simply be replicated by technology.

At New Designers this year I was struck by the exceptional standard of work from Edinburgh’s Jewellery & Silversmithing graduates and the dedication of their teaching team.

One of those graduates, Rosina Payan Pecorelli, was a winner of our FORGE Awards and showcased free of charge in our Graduate Showcase in August. Seeing that quality of work first-hand makes this decision even harder to understand.

Once courses like these close, specialist teaching, facilities, knowledge and skills can disappear with them.

I very much hope University of Edinburgh Principal Sir Peter Mathieson, Edinburgh College of Art Principal Professor Juan Cruz and Vice-Principal Professor Sarah Prescott listen to the growing response and reverse this decision.

📣 OPEN TODAY! October jewellery showcase: MOBY DICK 🌟

📚 Each month we present independent jewellery designers connected by a shared theme. This year, our showcases take inspiration from book titles linked to distinguished jewellers.

Our October showcase, Moby Dick, takes inspiration from accomplished jeweller Sonny Bailey-Aird and Herman Melville’s exploration of light, darkness and contrast including a wonderful passage in which he describes how a jeweller can reveal a diamond’s brilliance by placing it against a dark background.

“Though in the clear air of day, suspended against a blue-veined neck, the purewatered diamond drop will healthful glow; yet, when the cunning jeweller lays it against a gloomy ground, and then lights it up… Then come out those fiery effulgences, infernally superb; then the evil-blazing diamond, once the divinest symbol of the crystal skies, looks like some crown-jewel stolen from the King of Hell.”
— Moby Dick by Herman Melville

Across the showcase you’ll see a wonderfully varied response to the theme, from diamonds and richly coloured gemstones to textured metals, strong forms and pieces exploring contrast, surface, light and shadow.

📆 Showcase open 30 September – 23 October

📣Announcement! I’m very excited to share that I’ve been invited to become an Ambassador for the inaugural Birmingham Jewellery Biennial, taking place in May 2027, and of course I said yes! 🙌

The Biennial has the ambition to become the UK’s flagship festival celebrating contemporary jewellery, bringing together makers, organisations, events, workshops, exhibitions and audiences across Birmingham.

For me, being an Ambassador is about much more than having a title attached to the event. It’s about actively supporting something I believe has the potential to be important for our industry: sharing opportunities, making introductions, connecting people and organisations, offering experience and insight where it might be useful, and helping more people discover what is happening.

One of the things I value most about the jewellery industry is the strength of its community. So many opportunities begin with someone saying, “You should speak to…” or “Have you seen this?” and I see the Ambassador role very much in that spirit.

The first opportunities have already been announced, with Open Calls inviting wider partners to become involved in programming events, jewellery workshops and Open Studios.

I’ll be sharing more as the Biennial develops over the coming months, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what grows from this first edition.

Congratulations to everyone behind Birmingham Jewellery Biennial 👏👏👏 I’m delighted to be playing a small part in helping to build it.

PART TWO: What makes a designer’s work unmistakably & uniquely theirs!?🙌

Swipe through to read what our September designers said…

📚Each month we present independent jewellery designers connected by a shared theme. This year, our showcases take inspiration from book titles. Our September showcase takes inspiration from the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, who writes of a world awakened through colour.

“You’re beginning to see the colour red.”
“It was so — oh, I wish language were more precise! The red was so beautiful! … Do you see it all the time?”
“I see all the colours … When you receive the memories. You’ll gain wisdom, along with colours.”
Jonas wasn’t interested, just then, in wisdom. It was the colours that fascinated him.
“Close your eyes and be still, now. I’m going to give you a memory of a rainbow.”
— The Giver by Lois Lowry

📆 Ends TODAY!
⏰ Visit: 10am to 6pm
📍 FORGE, 59 Leather Lane, London EC1N 7TJ
