our chair is behind the theme of our exhibtion “Contemporary Enamelling - an exploration of form” which aims to demonstrate the wide range of techniques our members use.

Cathy says her work, like many enamellers’, gets mistaken for ceramics from a distance. Often, it’s only when you pick up a piece that you realise it’s something quite different!
Here’s a video of Cathy working on one of her copper vessels in the technique of sgraffito, where a layer of enamel is applied and worked into before firing to reveal the layers underneath.

Visit our exhibition which is on show until 12th Spetember

MEMBER OF THE MONTH • Caroline Finlay

Enamel allows her to introduce colour into her work and she uses a palette that echoes her coastal inspiration. Caroline explores the enamelling techniques of basse-taille, stencilling and cloisonné in a free, contemporary way, mixing colours and stoning back layers to mix glossy and matt surfaces and combines this with traditional jewellery making, creating unique mark making and distinctive pieces.

“Contemporary Enamelling - an exploration of form” has been the brain child of our new Chair Catherine J Timbrell who says, “We still seem to surprise people with our enamelled vessels; the reaction is so often, ‘Oh, it’s not ceramic!’” This exhibition is dedicated to showing the vast array of what is possible in enamel and has a focus on sculpture, wall panels and vessles.
