Two stones. A matched pair. Finding two mandarine garnets of the same intensity — that particular flame colour, the one that comes from manganese rather than iron — is not straightforward. The spessartite that looks identical in a parcel often reads completely differently once it is in the light with the other. These two took time to find. They are becoming a pair of Portuguese-style rings for the Esmeralda Gold collection — designed to be worn one on each hand. Not as a set. As a decision. ✦

Designing and collaborating with Rolls-Royce taught me something about restraint. The brief was not: make something beautiful. The brief was: make something that belongs. Belongs inside that interior. Inside that world. Beside that level of craft. The pieces I made were cleaner in aesthetic than most pieces I have made for private clients. More confident in their simplicity. I work with brands and private clients whose standards require jewellery that simply cannot be bought off a shelf. ✦

Nobody wants to ask a jeweller what a piece costs. So people don't enquire at all. They assume the answer is more than they can afford — and they never find out they were wrong. I will be totally honest- the stone is almost always the largest part of the cost. Two rubies that look identical in a photograph can differ significantly in price — origin, whether it has been heated, how it behaves in real light. The metal matters less than people expect. Complexity of setting matters more. And the consultation? That costs nothing. Tell me the budget at the start. Not because I want to spend all of it — because knowing it means I design something that works. There is no figure that embarrasses me. DM to begin a conversation. ✦

Tsavorite.

A vivid green that is hard to believe exists. Not forest, not leaf, not jade. Something closer to light itself — the particular intensity you get when sun hits shallow water over white sand.

Tsavorite is a garnet, found primarily in the borderlands of Kenya and Tanzania. The finest specimens come from deposits so small and remote that the stone remains genuinely rare — not marketing rare. Actually rare.

It also has something most green stones do not. Fire. The kind that makes it look lit from within rather than simply coloured.

I love working with this stone. It asks for a setting confident enough to let it speak — nothing fussy, nothing that competes. Here I have paired it with an equally beautiful rare Tahitian pearl.

Bespoke commissions open. DM to begin. ✦

Press from the archive. Being featured in Vogue at any point in a career is not a footnote. It is part of the foundation of what a house is built on. I share this not to look backwards but because the story of Ana De Costa includes twenty years of being noticed by the people who matter in this world — and that context belongs on this grid. The work that earned this was made at the same bench where everything is still made today. Nothing has changed except what is possible. ✦

The detail nobody asks about. Inside the shank of this ring there is an engraving. A date. Three people in the world know it is there. This is part of the bespoke process that does not photograph — the reason a commission exists, not just what it looks like. Over twenty years in the jewellery industry I have set stones chosen for where two people met, engraved co ordinates for where a couple met, hidden birthstones against the skin where only the wearer ever feels them. A piece purchased from a cabinet is an object. A piece made for someone is a record. Bespoke commissions. DM to begin. ✦

Someone arrives with a ring that belonged to their grandmother. They never wear it. It sits in a drawer and has done for years. They want to make it into something they would actually wear — and they feel guilty about wanting to change it. I will be completely honest, a piece of jewellery in a drawer is not being honoured. It is being stored. The point of an heirloom is that it is worn. The generation who made it intended it to be on someone's hand — not to be an object to feel guilty about. If there is something sitting in a drawer in your house, you already know what it is. DM me. That is where we start. ✦

The Financial Times. How to Spend It. March 2008. This pendant — onyx set in yellow gold with tsavorites and diamonds — was chosen for the cover of the FT's special fashion edition. I remember seeing it on newsstands. That specific feeling. Archival press belongs on the grid. Not because it is old news — because it is part of the story of this house and what it has always been capable of. The work continues. ✦

The stone comes first. Always. Before the sketch. Before the setting. Before any decision is made about what the piece will be. I look at a lot of stones to find the right one. Two that appear identical in a photograph can be entirely different when held up to the light — the way colour moves through one and sits flat in the other. The way one seems alive and the other one doesn't. You cannot see that difference in a photograph. You have to see them. This is why I ask every commission client to come and see stones in person before design work begins. The right stone tells you what it wants to become. Bespoke commissions open. DM to begin. ✦
