Colour comes with the territory in this job, but, I won't lie, onyx — or as I like to call it, the little black dress of gemstones — is one of my favourites to work with. It's striking, versatile and it doesn't break the bank. It's the perfect partner for a pop of colour and its simple geometric forms means it can often be used in Art Deco-inspired pieces (yes, another one of my loves 😉).

Peridot: the stone du mois for August. And, perhaps, summer too. So fond of the yellowish-green stone, the ancient Egyptians referred to it as the ‘gem of the sun’, which is quite a fitting sentiment. Its fun-loving, distinct, bright green hues make it a dream to work with and it does, genuinely, look beautiful in the sun…so perhaps consider adding some green to your next design 😉. Claw checks often get lost on the life admin list but they are really important, particularly if you have a sentimental or expensive piece of jewellery. This beautiful ring had loose claws but thankfully they were all tigtened and checked before the worst happened.

I’ve worked in the jewellery business for a very long time (🤫) and in some amazing places. Now it’s fair to say that some things are universal in the jewellery trade annual calendar: #1 Christmas (always) starts in July (oh yes it does!); snowy catalogues and tinsel-lined media plans are all done when the sun is beating down. And #2: the press will always ask for product images of coral, turquoise, pearl and lapis in the run up to their summer editions. Why? Simply because you can’t get a better summer look. It’s that time of year again when I’m seen ungainly chasing after beautiful butterflies trying to identify them for the Big Butterfly Count 🦋 !

From 16th July to 9th August, the butterfly count requires you to spend 15 minutes a day in an open (ideally green) space noting down any butterfly species you see, which then helps scientists track population trends and environmental health. I’m proud that my 8-year-old niece has taken on the mantel with me now (and knows SO much more than me!)

Butterflies have always been a favourite design symbol of mine and a wonderful source of inspiration for colours and patterns. They truly are the epitome of elegance!

I was lucky enough to be treated to a trip away recently 🇨🇭. I don’t like to travel with expensive pieces of jewellery, so for me versatile, multi-functional pieces are key.

My choice: a trusted pair of gold hoops with detachable drop gems. I can assure you there is not an outfit I can’t accessorise them with! I have coloured briolette drops for the day — citrine, blue topaz and the like — and then I reserve my pearl and onyx drops for the evening. And should the holiday mood take me, I can add them all together for a fun, multi-gem look; or they are just as easily thrown onto a long chain as a matching pendant.

All good jewellery starts with a story. This commission, and its story, genuinely left me feeling so happy. This couple had known each other for years but had found love later on in life and were obviously meant to be, some might say a perfect match. This ring, a symbol of that bond, now acts as both the engagement ring and wedding band after the originals were no longer worn. The stones are the couple’s birthstones — aquamarine and diamond (another perfect match 😉 ) — and inside is engraved with their special date and set with small sapphires.

Bold, audacious and rich in colour, Ruby is gracing us with its presence as the birthstone for July. As well as the zodiac stone for Capricorn, it’s also the wedding anniversary gift for 40 years — I’m afraid you’ve got to go long for the good ones! 😂

With strong connotations of love and passion, it’s easy to see why clients choose a ruby for their centre-piece or focal point. Perhaps 40 years is worth the wait after all? 😉
