ClarisahTime - Guilloche straight line and rose engine

ClarisahTime - Guilloche straight line and rose engine I recently got the bug of guilloche and since old machines are close to impossible to find or to get, I have decided to design my own rose engine. We shall see!

Redesigning the rubber (or follower?) holder such that it can be easily removed without removing the side assembly. Not really needed, but a neat small improvement coming up in next 3D printed version of my rose engine.

While testing my new steel machine as well as continuing to enjoy my 3D printed rose engine, I thought I needed a faster way to change and experiment with new rosette patterns without having to disassemble the whole spindle with ball bearings, collar, springs, wornmetc etc every time. This is what I am thinking so far... Any thoughts and suggestions welcome, especially if there is a better way.

This is the double ratchet mechanism on the cross slide, each tooth shifts the assembly left or right by 0.02mm which is plenty of precision for guilloche work. It's very smooth. Most of all, I spent some time redesignining the lock mechanism and trying different springs: there was an almost exact type of soothing sound that I wanted to get. Enjoy!

One of my followers asked to show the rosettes against the rubber (also called 'follower'?). There you go! Intentionally, I'm showing off my solar nixie watch (not to everyone's taste and perhaps a shock to see for those into fine watchmaking!), it looks ridiculously large on my small wrist but - there you go - another of my creations (design, coding, electronics, case), starting from available ideas and open source code, later completely re-written to my liking. The most efficient nixie watch in the world. Sorry got lost, back to the rose engine, in this video, I'm testing it with 2x hard springs of 3mm wire each. You can see how quickly the rubber bounces off the peak going into the valley of the rosette lobe. It improves and it's smoother at lower speeds and it's better still with softer springs. Trying out different spring lenghts, wire sizes, one spring or two springs, etc... It's so much fun and it does show in the quality of the work on the brass dial, depending on the wave pattern too. (no, I'm not affiliated with the microscope brand). So much to learn!

Trying a different colour combination. Now it reminds me a bit of a vintage Lego! The 3D rose engine is a lot of fun. About 50% through before completion of the main body only. More on it later.

Added a joystick to start/stop the machine, all good fun.

I have been itching to do a first run. I got distracted designing a cross slide based on the Hardinge model (more on that later). Here a couple of pictures of my first guilloche dial on my steel rose engine. So many micro adjustments still to do and the operator needs more training than the machine, but there you go for now!

Preparing the rose engine that will be for sale this year. Beautiful 65mm sapele board, such a warm feeling to contrast the cast iron legs and the steel rose engine.
