Swipe to see what they look like now.

These are the little leaves made from sterling silver and enamel that I’ve created using what I saw at the William Morris Gallery as inspiration. This is my first ever attempt at this enamelling technique called plique a jour. Each little piece is made using transparent enamel, with no silver at the back, so it looks like a tiny piece of stained glass.

Riddled with little pitfalls, it’s a tricky technique, which is great fun to experiment with, but needs a lot of practice to be consistent and good. As my very wise enamelling instructor said in my first lesson - enamelling takes five minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. Wise words indeed.

Only time will tell if I can turn it into a product range, so watch this space…

Did you see my last post about my visit to the William Morris Gallery and how I was thinking of using his designs as inspiration for new enamel designs?

Well this is the first step in trying to come up with something. I made these little leaves and some other random shapes the other day.

My plan is to fill them with enamel, using a technique called plique a jour. Roughly translated it means “letting in daylight”, and it’s called this because that’s exactly what it does.

Because there’s no back on the shapes, when filled with enamel, each piece looks like a tiny piece of stained glass, and does indeed let the light come through the enamel.

It’s a tricky technique because the only thing keeping the enamel in place is surface tension, and the enamel can melt and just fall through in the kiln if I leave it in even a few seconds too long. Chances are that my first few attempts will be an almighty mess, but I’ll post them here anyway. And if they work out, I’ll be thrilled. Watch this space…

I’ve been shying away from Instagram for a few months now, with good reason. 2024 has been a terrible year for me, and today’s trip to the William Morris Gallery was an attempt to pick myself back up and inject some form of normalcy into my life again.

As pick-me-ups go, it certainly was a good one. Designer, artist, businessman, activist, writer, poet - was there anything William Morris couldn’t do?

This print is perhaps one of his most famous, and I absolutely love it. I’ve decided to give myself a bit of a challenge. I’m going to study his designs in detail and see if I can use them as inspiration for some enamel jewellery. Watch this space…

I've often thought about the gemstones in my jewellery, either because of the meaning they hold or because of their beauty, but rarely have I thought about how they came to be. This blog post demystifies the life of a gemstone, and gives you a whistlestop tour of what that gemstone was up to before it eventually became a part of your jewellery. Here's the link:
