Q&A • How small or large can an ancient coin be?

Ancient coins were struck in a remarkable range of sizes, shaped by the metal used, the denomination, and the issuing authority.Ancient coins were struck in a remarkable range of sizes, shaped by the metal used, the denomination, and the issuing authority. The smallest, tiny silver obols or bronze minims, were no larger than a fingernail, intended for everyday transactions. The largest, such as the grand Tetradrachm of Alexander the Great or the bronze Dupondius of Caesar Claudius, were struck as statements of power and prestige, nearly the size of a modern pocket watch.

At Dubini, we work across this entire spectrum, finding beauty in the intimate scale of a small silver and in the commanding presence of a large medallion.

DUBINI x Boffi|DePadova — A setting for conversation, craftsmanship and design.

Bathed in natural light and framed by timeless Italian interiors, Boffi|DePadova’s London home set the stage for an evening celebrating heritage, design and craftsmanship in the heart of Chelsea.

Hosted by Benedetta Dubini in conversation with jewellery curator and consultant Archana Thani, the showroom became an elegant backdrop for an exploration of coin jewellery, numismatics and the enduring dialogue between antiquity and contemporary design.

Located on the first floor of a modern four-storey building, the penthouse-style space is an ode to the art of urban living — where refined minimalism, expansive light and Italian craftsmanship create a destination for architects, interior designers and collectors alike.

Thank you to for welcoming us into such a beautiful setting, and to everyone who joined us for an evening of history, objects and storytelling.

DUBINI x Boffi | De Padova — Wearing History, a conversation between Benedetta Dubini and jewellery curator and consultant Archana Thani.

Last week, DUBINI was honoured to host an intimate evening at Boffi | De Padova’s Chelsea home, bringing together collectors and friends for a discussion centred on ancient history, Italian craftsmanship, and timeless design.

Archana and Benedetta explored numismatics — the origins of ancient coins, the great empires from which they emerged, and the gods and goddesses they depict. Together, they reflected on how these treasured fragments of history resonate with each collector, who becomes both custodian and storyteller, carrying their meaning forward through time.

What made the evening especially memorable was hearing guests share their own stories and the personal connections they hold with jewellery and objects passed down through generations.

Set within the refined interiors of Boffi | De Padova — a space that embodies the elegance and warmth of Italian design — and accompanied by Silver Kore, a striking sculpture by Italian artist Massimiliano Pelletti, the evening celebrated the dialogue between antiquity and modernity, where fragments of the past are reimagined into contemporary treasures to be cherished for generations to come.

Thank you to for hosting us, for such an inspiring conversation, and to everyone who joined us and shared their stories.

Unveiled | Athena Coin

HISTORY

Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, is prominently featured on the new Athenian coins. Known for her strategic prowess, Athena is depicted wearing a helmet with three crests, signifying her martial attributes.

Athena became the patron goddess of Athens as a result of a contest between her and Poseidon, her uncle and the god of the sea. Each god offered the city one gift, and the citizens would choose the winner based on which they preferred. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident, causing a mighty saltwater spring to emerge. Undismayed, Athena gave the citizens an olive tree, which proved more bountiful and valuable for the city. She was victorious in the competition, but her rivalry with her uncle remained tumultuous, portrayed as such in Homeric poetry and other myths.

COIN DETAILS

Athena, Tetradrachm, Circa 98/7 B.C., Silver, 30-32mm.

Obverse: Profile of the Greek goddess Athena wearing a helmet. A mythological creature, either a Pegasus or a griffin, is found on the side of the helmet.

Reverse: Athena’s owl perches upon an amphora, a large, often ceramic vessel used to transport and store various products such as wine or olive oil, that symbolises Athens’ prowess in the olive oil trade.

What are the origins of Coin Jewellery?

From the opulence of Roman adornment, to the refinement of Byzantine craftsmanship and the grandeur of medieval courts, coins have long been worn as symbols of power, memory, and wealth.

What we see today is not a revival, but a continuation. An enduring lineage of adornment that has never truly fallen out of favour, only evolved with time.

Unveiled | Pietas Coin

HISTORY

Pietas, the divine embodiment of duty, religiosity, and loyalty, was one of the foremost virtues of ancient Rome. Pietas was more than a concept; she was personified as a goddess, symbolising the sacred essence of devotion.

According to a miraculous legend, a poor woman who was starving in prison was saved when her daughter gave her breast milk. Caught in the act, the daughter was not punished but recognised for her pietas. Mother and daughter were set free and given public support for the rest of their lives. The site was regarded as sacred to the goddess Pietas (consecratus deae) because she had chosen to manifest her presence there. The story exemplified pietas erga parentes, the proper devotion one ought to show to one’s parents.

COIN DETAILS

Pietas, Denarius, Circa 48 B.C., Silver, 18mm.

Obverse: Depicting the head of Pietas, facing right, the personification of duty, loyalty, and devotion.

Reverse: Featuring two clasped hands overlapping a winged caduceus with intertwining snakes, a symbol of harmony.
