Introducing my pieces for Re:Framed at Fred Aldous Munich Jewellery Week
Using earlier work, an exploration of my experience of being a person of mixed heritage who is frequently perceived as something else. My new pieces are not only a continuation of these works but an exploration of how symbols, punctuation and words can be reframed to mean something entirely different.
The giver may try to pass off the interaction as harmless, the receiver may interpret it as a microaggression, as it was intended.
Digital communication can feel abrasive and is easily misconstrued. The inclusion of specific punctuation marks and emojis can feel jarring. Is this something we need to investigate, or do we simply continue...business as usual?
‘Gaslit’ When one person says to another that they’re playing the race card. Why are they saying it? A silencer of a statement, words to put you in your place and said only by someone who holds problematic views. Proceed with caution you may need to make a quick escape. Retreat
‘2001’ Have you ever felt othered? Mixed is an ethnic group category that was introduced by the UK Office for National Statistics for the 2001 census. In the 2021 census, the recorded mixed population stood at 2.9%, 1.7 million people.
‘Equal Opportunities’ What are you supposed to do when the equal opportunities form doesn’t include you or only serves to make you feel unseen? Do you sabotage the form, tick the OTHER box or do you ‘prefer not say’?
‘Pass Agg’ How do you feel about exclamation marks? Friendly!enthusiastic‼️angry⚠️or a bit passive aggressive ⁉️‼️‼️
‘Mic Drop’ A response to the illustration behind the piece. Conversation over 🎤
‘ShutUp’ Just because someone delivers something with a smile. Doesn’t mean they weren’t trying to hurt you. ShutUp yeah 👍🏽
