Recently bought Philosohers Veil. It’s a mostly herbaceous mossy fougere with a dark sort of twist in the base. The opening is clean and herbal floral - feeling bright and quite designery - but the depth in the base is very different - it’s both dark almost tarry woods but also quite sweet and vanillic. It’s a perfume you’d be forgiven for assuming was quite simplistic from the outset but as it develops it shines.

Very very durable too.

I don’t know a lot of BDK fragrances. I’m not super familiar with the original velvet tonka so I’m not going to be able to give you comparison notes. But I can tell you this smells like a pistachio pastry. It’s definitely sweet. Not quite diabetic coma sweet but pushing in that direction. It’s very dense and velvety in texture so I guess the brief was well observed. It has a warm leathery base that stops it going full on gourmand and lends it a supple heft.

It lasts and lasts - which is impressive. Overall I’d say this isn’t really my favourite style of perfume in that it’s very gourmand quite vanilla heavy - But it’s very nicely done and certainly captures that oh so vogue pistachio aspect fantastically. For foodie fans it’ll be a must try

And yes. That’s a vintage (I use the term vintage advisedly - to be honest I remember buying it for my brother in law about 15 years ago for less than £15 - but here I had to shell out quite a lot more)

This is Dubai Musk from - I bought it from using someone else’s 10% discount code. Which made it about £50 from memory. And I would say that’s some of the best £50 I’ve spent this year. Because this is lovely. It’s fresh, vibrant and energetic at the top - a bunch of citrusy notes giving holiday pool bar cocktail energy and then a warm sweet body musk that drifts along beautifully. This is a great versatile perfume that’s guaranteed to offend nobody - it smells wonderful and remains interesting throughout. Performance is solid and price is more than fair. This is good stuff.

It is NOT even similar as a scent but fans of vibes like Blonde, LV Imagination etc will enjoy this.

It ain’t that. It’s sweet gloopy, largely inoffensive if applied in moderation, fragrance for young people. I cannot relate.

A couple of .duchaufour’s perfumes. Wilfully unruly, these jagged angles are chaotic and disorderly. Are the perfumes?

Well today let me tell you about White Blood which is a new release from the brand. Now firstly I’ve no idea what white blood would smell like so I don’t come at this with any preconceptions - but this is a tropical fruity perfume that’s not overly heavy on the fruitiness. Like a well mannered fruit salad rather than a gaudy fruit punch with an umbrella in it. Side note - I think umbrellas in drinks are massively under rated.

The polite fruitiness yields to a salty musk and ambergris combo. Elegant and durable this isn’t a beast mode projection monster or anything but it lasts very well.

It’s an unusual perfume - not jarring and weird but just a little unusual. I think if you want a tropical fruity number that isn’t *by* the numbers then definitely check this excellently angled perfume

pair here. The original you know. Of course you do. It’s a big gaudy dazzling driven lavender and vanilla - squelchy and thick - it’s the neo-classical spiritual descendent of Caron Pour Un Homme but like it’s rejected its aristocratic roots and has taken up with a gang of circus performers and hedonists.

Anyway. The blue one smells quite similar. It’s spicier with something approaching a liquorice styled note making it feel more robust and perhaps a little less “lads in the club” than the original. It is also denser and longer lasting if somewhat less diffusive than its stable mate.

Basically it’s still for the kids though. And your author is unlikely to be wearing these much just because I’m sadly no longer 16.
