🍝 From water… to salt… to spaghetti!

If you've been following JBG-Jewellery for a while, you may have seen me experimenting with water casting and salt casting.

Well… there's another rather unexpected material that can be used to create texture in silver.

Spaghetti! 😄

Yes, really. 🍝

Molten silver is cast into dried spaghetti, creating wonderfully random channels, textures and shapes. Once the pasta has done its job, it’s removed, leaving behind a completely unique piece of silver.

I love these casting techniques because you never quite know what you're going to get. The material creates the texture and the silver turns it into something wearable.

And I promise, this is one recipe where you definitely don't want to add parmesan! 😂

🎉 EXCITING NEWS! JBG-Jewellery is now on Google! 🎉

Another little milestone for my small jewellery business, and I'm doing a happy dance (AGAIN)! 💃✨

JBG-Jewellery now has its very own Google Business Profile, making it easier for people to discover my handmade, recycled silver jewellery and find out a little more about what I do.

✨ From salt to silver…

One of my favourite things about working with silver is that sometimes you have to let the process do the talking.

For these pieces, molten recycled sterling silver is cast into salt crystals, creating wonderfully unpredictable, organic textures.

The salt creates the texture, but I never know exactly what will emerge until the silver has cooled and the piece is revealed. That means every piece is completely unique - no moulds, no mass production, just a little bit of science, a little bit of magic and a lot of heat! 🔥

I shared this process before, but it seemed worth bringing it back for those of you who are new to JBG-Jewellery.

✨ A little more about me…

With quite a few new faces joining JBG-Jewellery recently, I thought it was time to say hello again!

I’m Jo - the designer, maker, photographer, packer, social media manager and chief tea drinker behind JBG-Jewellery. ☕😊

From my little studio in West Berkshire, I create handmade recycled sterling silver jewellery inspired by nature, memories, stories and the beauty of everyday life.

Before becoming a silversmith, I spent around 30 years as a scientist in the pharmaceutical industry. There are surprisingly lots of similarities between science and jewellery making - precision, patience, problem-solving and occasionally asking “why didn't that work?” 😂

Away from my jewellery bench, I also volunteer as a career and interview coach for Smart Works, a UK charity helping women move into employment. I love being able to use some of the skills from my previous career to help others feel more confident.

Sustainability is important to me, so I work predominantly with recycled silver and love incorporating sea glass and other repurposed materials wherever I can.

And of course, I love creating one-off pieces and commissions with a story behind them. 💚

🌿 Thank you, St Mary’s Church Burghfield! 🌿

What a lovely day at Saturday’s Eco Festival St Mary's Church Burghfield 💚

It was such a lovely, informative event, with plenty of ideas and inspiration about looking after our planet - and it was also a great opportunity to catch up with so many local faces.

I was delighted to sell some of my recycled sterling silver jewellery, so thank you to everyone who stopped by my table, had a chat, admired the jewellery, and took a piece of JBG-Jewellery home with them. 🥰

A big thank you to everyone at St Mary’s for organising such a positive and interesting event and for creating such a welcoming community atmosphere.

And, of course, thank you to everyone who came along and supported all the local exhibitors. 🌿

It was lovely to be part of it! 💚

🌿 What makes JBG-Jewellery eco-friendly?

With the Eco Festival at St Mary’s Burghfield coming up tomorrow, I thought I’d explain a little about what “eco” means in my little jewellery studio.

For me, it starts with recycled silver. ♻️

I work predominantly with recycled sterling silver, and I also reuse my own silver offcuts and even the tiny bits of silver sawdust that would otherwise be swept away.

But silver isn't the only material that gets a second chance…

🌊 Sea glass - beautiful pieces of glass softened and transformed by the sea.
♻️ Repurposed glass - giving existing materials a new life rather than always reaching for something brand new.
💎 Reused beads and stones - incorporating beautiful materials that are already out there.

And then there’s the making itself.

I love techniques that celebrate texture, imperfection and the unexpected. Water casting, reticulation, fusing and other processes often produce shapes that simply couldn't be replicated exactly.

Which means that rather than mass-produced jewellery made by the thousands, I make small batches and one-off pieces designed to be worn and enjoyed for years.

I believe that making thoughtful choices about materials, reusing what I can and creating things with longevity is a worthwhile place to start. 🌍💚

🎄 Christmas stock update… sort of! 😂

I was supposed to be working on my Christmas jewellery.

I had a plan.
I had a list.
I had good intentions.
And then the water-casting started. 🤷‍♀️

So, naturally, Christmas jewellery has been temporarily abandoned while I made a couple of these rather lovely water-cast pendants and rings instead.

Because apparently when you’re a silversmith, “I’ll just make one little thing” is a perfectly reasonable way to lose an afternoon! 😆

I love water casting because you never quite know what you’re going to get. Each piece develops its own wonderfully organic shape and texture - completely unique and impossible to mass-produce.

So… Christmas stock will have to wait a little longer.

At least I’ve been productive in my distraction! 😉
