Master Cutler's March Highlights 💚

March has been an incredible month celebrating community, heritage and innovation across The Company of Cutlers and South Yorkshire!

We began with a warm and meaningful Iftar at Sheffield Town Hall and continued with a series of prestigious Livery events in London, including dinners with the Cutlers, Clothworkers, Haberdashers, Fishmongers and Grocers, where HRH The Princess Royal delivered an inspiring address.

Back in the region, the Master Cutler was proud to champion South Yorkshire businesses at the Make UK Conference and attend key events with ICAEW, the Sheffield Law Society, IMechE and the Sheffield Legal Service.

March also brought moments of reflection with Sheffield’s COVID-19 Day of Reflection and moments of inspiration with visits to the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Marcegaglia Stainless Sheffield and AESSEAL, as well as the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Education and outreach remained a priority, with talks at Sheffield College, the LSE and the Get Up To Speed event.

Ending the month on a high with the 100th anniversary of the Joint Awards, the Varsity Ice Hockey match and welcoming Sughra Begum DL as the new High Sheriff.

✨Celebrating 100 Years of Engineering Excellence

This week, we were proud to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Joint Awards at Cutlers’ Hall - a century of partnership between the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and The Armourers & Brasiers' Company.

For 100 years, these awards have supported students, apprentices, and early‑career engineers, helping them pursue projects and training that strengthen our region’s engineering future. The evening was hosted by Professor Keith Jackson, Master Cutler of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, and Dr Geoffrey Andrews, Master of The Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers.

A special thank you to our Archivist, Emma Paragreen, who uncovered original documents from the awards’ earliest days, helping us reflect on the programme’s remarkable origins. We were also delighted to have our Chief Executive & Clerk, Martin van Kan, welcome guests to the Hall, alongside Company Members and Freemen who continue to champion this long‑standing tradition.
