A few old and new pieces in Bruton. We’re a lovely collective of 12 small businesses doing a really eclectic range of products, from the most deliciously soft leather pouches and slouches to pottery, beauty and eco products, paintings and clothing, glass and antique furniture, all bang next-door to the heavenly SMOUK INTERIORS (featured last week on radio 4 on the Patch)

One of the few pieces I’ve had professionally photographed. I think it does it a disservice. It’s too clinical for something so organic and bold. Reminds me of ads in the back of magazines. But I wanted to show it off.
This was remodeled using a customers diamonds, nestling in snakes of red gold .

Of course being an artisan means I spend a lot of time trying stuff out, experimenting with shapes, a fair bit of trial and error, and always being in the pursuit of beauty regardless of how long it takes. My mums engagement ring. My mum had three iterations of her engagement ring over her 68 years married to my Dad. This one I made for her about 18 years ago I think. Beautiful little sapphire.
Made me reflect again on the meaning and emotional language of jewellery. How something made with feeling and care, and that is imbued with integrity and commitment to being the best you can do with the skills you have and the parameters you are given, goes on to be a symbol of something as profound as a marriage, and a love spanning 70 years.
It’s worth commissioning an artist, it’s important to wear something that an artist has invested heart and soul into. Those pieces will always be better value than the cheap alternatives, that are copies of the authentic originals. Pieces made with heart will always radiate the soul of the wearer, rather than be mere decoration.
