Are we in a toxic situationship with discount culture?

Bethany Biron’s latest piece on perpetual sales culture poses the question: have discounts lost their meaning?

So many big brands operate in a constant cycle of markdowns, inflated "original prices," and never-ending sales that it’s hard to tell if we're actually getting a deal or just being conditioned to believe we are. And yet, we still chase that dopamine hit of “saving” money—even when the savings might be an illusion.

For small businesses, this landscape is especially tough. Price transparency builds trust, but customers have been trained to expect discounts. And when major retailers struggle to move away from sales-driven pricing, it’s clear this habit runs deep.

So how do we break the cycle? Should we shop more consciously, demand pricing transparency, or simply accept that sales are just another marketing tactic?

Helllloooooo.. is it about time for a re-intro?
I'm Thea! I make colourfully compelling jewellery using polymer clay, non-precious wires, gemstones and glass beads.
As bit of a fidgeter myself, I create textures that draw  hands to touch them - hopefully your own hands as you wear them, or other's hand with consent? 🤔, I digress..

A few random things about me:

1. I work full time, making jewellery for pleasure and I love that YOU love my creations 🥰
2. I'm an advocate for protecting time to create art in our day to day lives as part of our wellbeing. I like nothing better than to chat with you about crafts you've tried or would like to try and share tips or encouragement. Being out at a market is a good opportunity for conversation so come say 'hi' even if you're not in the mood/position to buy anything.
