GOLD WEDDING RINGS:
this is how the first pair of wedding rings I made look now. They belong to my sister and brother-in-law.
25 years on and the rings have taken on their own beautiful luster. I can still remember the nerves of working with gold for the first time. It was so much more expensive than anything I'd worked with before. Now I'll melt it in a heartbeat and love working with gold the most...the higher the carat the better.
I hired a space The Workshop Lewes to make the rings because I didn't have my own bench at that point. I'd completed a silver jewellery evening class there a few years before which kick started my love of making jewellery. Going downstairs into that basement workshop was like entering the most secret, magical place of endless possibilities. The mix of smells, sounds and textures triggered so many senses. I hope I've managed to create some of that feeling in my own workshop now.
To add even more pressure to this special commission, my sister didn't like wearing jewellery so this was (and I think still might be) her only piece of jewellery. So it had to be perfect. A classic pair of D-shape rings. Simple and timeless.
So without these gold wedding rings perhaps my life would've taken a different turn. I'm grateful every day that I was asked to make something so special.
