Oxidising silver with an egg!

If you want that lovely dark tone to your silver but have run out of your go to oxidising products, then try a boiled egg! The sulphur from the egg will cause the silver to oxidise, creating a variety of colours ranging from yellows, purples, blues and black. This technique works best when the egg is past its best, the boiled egg is still warm and the silver is placed in an airtight container alongside the egg.

It’s a perfect use for eggs that are past their best!

Nb. For the purpose of this video I initially nestled the ring inside the egg so the colour change can be seen where the ring is exposed!

Doming a ring ↩️💍😊

If you want your ring to have a curved outer edge and you have made it from flat sheet rather than a d-profile wire then this technique using a doming block effectively curves the flat sides of a ring into a dome 😊

Adding a texture to silver using a rolling mill and a piece of lace 😍

I love the soft texture that lace applies to this length of silver, perfect for what I want to use it for! Adjust the rolling mill to accommodate the thickness of the metal, the thickness of the lace is then impressed onto the metal, creating this delicate texture.

Work hardening an earring post!

Once you have soldered an earring post onto an earring, the post is essentially annealed and soft meaning it will be prone to bending easily. To combat this the post needs to be work hardened. Tumbling in a barrel polisher doesn’t fully harden it as tumbling only hardens the outer layer of the metal. To effectively work harden the post, hold the post in some pliers and twist the post a quarter turn. This will not only work harden the post but also check your soldering is secure!

Silver Fold Formed Earrings Visual Tutorial

These silver fold formed earrings are so fun to make. Fold forming was developed by Charles Lewton Brain in the 1980’s., developing methods for creating three dimensional forms through folding metal and forging it in specific directions.
