“Handmade” has become one of the most overused words in jewellery.

Many pieces described as handmade are actually mass-produced castings. While a craftsperson may polish, set stones or assemble the piece by hand, the jewellery itself was created from a mould and reproduced hundreds or even thousands of times.

True handmade jewellery is different. It starts with raw metal and is individually shaped, formed, soldered and finished by a person at every stage.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with cast jewellery when it’s honestly described. What makes us cross is when genuine handmade craftsmanship is treated as the same thing. They are completely different processes, requiring different skills and producing very different results. This ring for example, took many, many hours to create, and the sharp, bright cuts and texture would be impossible to recreate through a mass produced technique.

If you’re paying for handmade jewellery, it’s worth asking exactly what “handmade” means.

What should you look for when selling your precious metals?

We’re currently seeing lots of precious metal buyers operating from temporary locations, or offering mobile purchasing services.

While these can offer a convenient service, it’s worth ensuring they have the appropriate expertise, credentials, and a clear business address before proceeding. Look out for:

✔Official Hallmark Notice
✔ Accurate weighing on government calibrated scales
✔ Pricing based on current market rates
✔ A buyer who can explain purity and hallmarks
✔ A professional reputation and established premises
✔A buyer with diamond knowledge who can identify whether stones are natural or laboratory-grown, and recognise a stone’s value beyond its weight alone.

Without the right training and equipment, there’s a risk that diamonds could be overlooked, resulting in jewellery being assessed only for its metal content.

When selling jewellery, look for a buyer who understands both precious metals and gemstones. The right expertise can make a substantial difference to the accuracy and fairness of the amount offered.

Most importantly, never feel pressured to sell. A reputable precious metal buyer should be happy to answer your questions and explain exactly how they arrived at their offer.

The real question isn’t whether a diamond sparkles, it’s whether the person you trust can tell you it’s story.

Both natural and synthetic (laboratory grown) diamonds are made up of carbon atoms arranged in a very specific way. They appear identical, but they have very subtle differences that can only be detected by trained gemologists and sophisticated equipment designed for that purpose.

The difference lies in their origin.
Natural diamonds were formed deep within the Earth over billions of years before being brought to the surface through volcanic activity. Synthetic (laboratory-grown) diamonds are created by people using advanced technology.

Why does it matter?
Because origin affects value, rarity, and consumer choice. Natural diamonds are finite and valued partly for their geological history and rarity. Synthetic diamonds can offer a more affordable alternative but generally have different market values and resale expectations.

Neither is inherently “better” than the other, but customers deserve to know exactly what they are buying. Accurate identification and disclosure are essential for maintaining trust, ensuring fair pricing, and allowing people to make informed decisions based on what matters most to them.

Professional screening and testing are more important than ever, for the protection of consumers and the integrity of the jewellery industry, which is why we invest so heavily in screening training and equipment.

June is a month of meaning in more ways than one. 🌈🤍

Pearl, the birthstone of June, is treasured for its individuality: no two pearls are ever exactly alike. That feels especially fitting during Pride Month, a time to celebrate the beauty of being yourself and the strength that comes from embracing who you are.

While much progress has been made, Pride Month remains important. It’s a reminder that visibility, acceptance, and equality still matter.

This strand of semi baroque pearls, paired with a vibrant rainbow Murano Glass heart, has been crafted in our own workshop to be worn at this weekend. It is a celebration of the timeless elegance of June’s birthstone and the enduring message of Pride 🌈🩷

It’s that time of year again! Lots of young people will feel like they are at a crossroad with big decisions to make.

What advice would you give your younger self about work and careers?

When we’re younger, we sometimes feel like we need need to follow a perfect plan: choose the right path, make the right decisions, achieve success quickly. But it doesn’t always work out like this.

🩷Sometimes the best opportunities come unexpectedly
🩷Sometimes failure teaches more than success ever could
🩷And sometimes it takes years to realise your value

Our advice is:
• Don’t rush your journey
• Keep learning, always
• Confidence grows with experience
• Don’t stay where you’re unhappy
• Your work should mean something to you
• Success looks different for everyone

A career is built over time: through mistakes, resilience, hard work, and the people who encourage us along the way.
