The Western District is one of the earliest developed areas in Hong Kong. Founded in 1956, it began to flourish in the late 1950s🌟, leading to the industrialization of Hong Kong. The story of Tai Ping Carpets is not just corporate history📈; its development also reflects the changes in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region after World War II🌏.

In its early days, Tai Ping Carpets was weaving carpets in a two-story building on Castle Peak Road in Tuen Mun🏭. Back then, it was a valuable craft🎨, attracting many to learn, and with good employee benefits💼, it brought numerous job opportunities to post-war Hong Kong🤝. Its unique designs gained recognition from the royal family and the Hong Kong government👑, gradually expanding its business worldwide🌍. After the British troops landed in Hong Kong, they set up a camp on the high ground near Water Hole, and when they withdrew, they left behind an empty space. This space gradually attracted hawkers, street performers, healers, and even storytellers. 🏞️🛍️ In 1980, the Hong Kong government publicly auctioned off the area, allowing citizens to sell clothing and goods on Victoria Peak, as well as fortune-telling. Bit by bit, Hollywood Road’s ”Dai Tat Dei“ formed, providing affordable entertainment for nearby residents. 🎭💰

Hollywood Road‘s ”Tai Tat Tei“ thrived for decades until 1961 when the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal relocated to Lin Shi Street. Some vendors moved to the parking lot next to the terminal, known as ”New Fill Ground,“ which is what many Hong Kongers remember as the ”Tai Tat Tei.“ 🚢🛒 In 1978, the Urban Council reclaimed the land of Hollywood Road’s ”Tai Tat Tei“ to build Hollywood Road Park, thus unifying the two areas, and New Fill Ground could also be called ”Tai Tat Tei.“ 🌳🏞️

Later, the British government built the Shun Tak Centre, continuously reducing the indoor ”Tai Tat Tei“ area and moving it westward. 📉🏢 At the same time, with more entertainment options like TV and movies, foot traffic at ”Tai Tat Tei“ declined. 🎬📺 By 1992, the British government reclaimed the Upper Central ”Tai Tat Tei“ for reclamation development. The ”Tai Tat Tei“ that had accompanied Hong Kong people for a century officially closed. 😔🏁

Taiwan is a popular travel destination for Hong Kong people. In recent years, many Hong Kongers have also developed a fondness for keeping small pets. So, a place that combines these two elements is definitely Houtong! 🌏❤️🐾

Located in New Taipei City, Houtong is famous for cat watching and was recognized by CNN in 2019 as one of the world’s top six cat-watching spots. 🐾🏆 Additionally, the Ruifang Coal Mine in Houtong has played an important role in Taiwan’s mining industry. ⛏️🏭 In the 1970s, Houtong was the largest and highest-quality mining area in Taiwan. At its peak, it produced up to 220,000 tons of coal annually. However, with the mine ceasing operations in 1990, the population declined dramatically from 6,000 to just over a hundred, leading to Houtong’s temporary decline. 📉😔

It wasn‘t until 2009 that cat lovers initiated a series of activities in Houtong called “With Cats, Houtong is the Most Beautiful.” As a result, the stray cats gradually gained attention, and more people came to the area because of their love for cats. The public environment has also improved to protect these cats. 🐾💖 While the cats have become the stars of this small town, the traces of hard work and sweat left by the miners who risked their lives remain, preserving a valuable record of Taiwan’s early industrial development. 🏴‍☠️📜

This song, ”Joyful Street,“ has accompanied many of us as we grew up. Do you know the historical story behind it? 🎶🏙️

”Lai Tung Street“ was the original name of Joyful Street, located in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island. It was once known for its printing shops that specialized in wedding invitations. 📜💌 However, due to redevelopment plans by the Urban Renewal Authority, the ownership of Lai Tung Street was transferred to the government on November 6, 2005, leading to the disappearance of printing shops. 🏢🚧

After redevelopment, Lai Tung Street has become a tourist attraction, concentrating on various popular shops that offer local delicacies and showcase a blend of Eastern and Western cultures. It’s a must-visit spot during the Lunar New Year and Christmas, beloved by both travelers and the younger generation. 🎉🍰🌍

Yet, the street still has shops selling wedding cakes, and the red lanterns often hanging overhead create a joyful atmosphere, instantly transporting people back to the time of Joyful Street. 🏮❤️✨
