When you’re dealing with rounds, the most researched and perfected shape in the industry the mistakes usually happen in the fine print.
Here are three mistakes to avoid:
1. Compromising on the “Excellent” Cut
For round diamonds, the cut grade is king. You can have a D-color, flawless diamond, but if the cut is “Good” or “Fair,” it will look dull and dark.
Stick to a “Excellent” cut . This ensures the proportions are precisely set to bounce light back to your eye rather than leaking out the bottom.
2. Ignoring “Strong Blue” Fluorescence
Fluorescence is a hidden trait that can make a diamond look oily or hazy in natural sunlight. Don’t buy a high-color diamond (D, E, or F) with Strong Blue Fluorescence just because it’s cheaper.
Always check the diamond under natural UV light (sunlight) to ensure it stays crisp. If you are buying from a certificate: stick to “None” or “Faint” fluorescence for high-color stones.
3. Paying for “Invisible” Clarity
The price jump from a VS1 to a VVS1 or Internally Flawless (IF) diamond is massive, but to the naked eye, they look identical.
You can’t see the inclusions without a 10x jeweler’s loupe.
So, aim for “Eye-Clean” clarity. In round diamonds, you can often find a VS1/VS2 or even a high-quality SI1 where the inclusions are tucked away near the edge (girdle). Saving you 20% to 30% without sacrificing any visible beauty.
