Easy-to-remember “cheat sheet” for styling necklaces
A nice outfit isn’t enough — accessories are what really “lock in the vibe.” Learn these styling rules to level up your look.
To match accessories properly, remember these golden rules for necklaces:
High necklines
- Less coverage (shirt collars, polo collars, etc.) → Choose long, slim necklaces or small pendants that drop to the chest to create a focal point.
- More coverage (turtlenecks, fitted knit tops, etc.) → Choose long necklaces, bold pendants, multi-layered necklaces that hang down, or chunky statement necklaces worn over the collar to stand out.
Low necklines
- Less coverage (round neck, shallow V-neck, square off-shoulder, etc.) → Go for chokers, short delicate chains, bead necklaces, or small pendants.
- More coverage (deep V-neck, halter neck, off-shoulder styles, etc.) → Opt for statement necklaces, bold pieces, or layered short-to-long necklaces to fill the space.
Simple tops (minimal details, basic form, no focal points) → the necklace is the “spotlight”
- Pick statement necklaces, chunky chains, or large pendants to avoid a boring look.
- Or layer multiple slim necklaces → creates a trendy, edgy vibe.
Complex tops (lots of details, elaborate designs) → the necklace is just an “accent”
- Prioritize delicate, short, refined necklaces, or very light layering.
- A small pendant can add a touch of sparkle without “stealing the spotlight” from the top.
