The Patiala Ruby Choker, one of Cartierโs most stunning creations, is a dazzling fusion of Indian regal splendor and Parisian Art Deco design. In Indian culture, rubies, known as ratnaraj, or โking of gems,โ have long symbolized power, passion, and protection.
Reserved for royalty, they were believed to bring prosperity and preserve life force, making them a fitting choice for one of the most opulent jewels of its time.
After Indiaโs independence and the abolition of royal privileges in the mid-20th century, many princely treasures were lost, sold, or stolen. The choker went missing during this time until 2000, when it surfaced in Switzerland, but not in its original form. It had been shortened and converted into a bracelet. Cartier acquired the piece and, in 2012, restored it in Geneva using historic sketches and photographs. While not every original ruby was recovered, the choker was brought back to near-original glory, preserving its legacy as one of the most iconic royal jewels of the 20th century.
