Hand Embossed Leather Goods
Around the 1940s, the rich craft of leather embossing with hand painting was introduced in Shantiniketan, West Bengal, India. The embossed patterns and hand-painted motif work on leather practiced here are distinctively different from the usual leather crafts found elsewhere.
The artwork is created by touch dyeing vegetable-tanned leather. The leather used has the quality of permanently retaining the embossed imprint of motifs or batiks. A cotton pad or a glass, which has a smooth surface, is used to make the grains of the leather shine. Along with traditional motifs more abstract designs such as geometrics and floral designs have become popular. The products range from bags, wallets, key chains, jewellery boxes, and many more. They are available in a wide range of colors depending on market requirements.
The products are popular in foreign markets, including in the US, Russia and Japan. The products have got a geographical indication (GI) tag.
We export a wide range of leather goods handcrafted in Shantiniketan. For more information, please visit our website (link in bio) and contact us.
