Akbar Padamsee used the human form to explore the inescapable friction of life. Whether locked in an embrace or standing side-by-side, they rarely project ecstatic romance. Instead they are imbued with a quiet melancholy, serving less as representations of individuals than as vehicles for psychological and existential inquiry.

The present lot shows Jamini Roy’s mastery over western impressionism, a technique he learnt during his training years in the Government School of Art in Calcutta. After which, he quickly became a successful, highly sought-after portrait and post-impressionist style landscape painter.

However, he later abandoned this lucrative career and Western oil paints to look toward his roots in rural Bengal, marking a dramatic turning point in his visual vocabulary.

Roy was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1955 and was declared a National Treasure Artist by the Government of India, ensuring his work is recognised as an invaluable part of the country's cultural heritage.
