Hard Chrome Plating

Most people would not be very familiar with hard chrome plating. Hard chrome plating is chrome plating that has been applied as a fairly heavy coating (usually measured in thousandths of an inch) for wear resistance, lubricity, oil retention, and other 'wear' purposes. Some examples would be hydraulic cylinder rods, rollers, piston rings, mold surfaces, thread guides, gun bores, etc. 'Hard chrome' is not really harder than other chrome plating, it is called hard chromium because it is thick enough that a hardness measurement can be performed on it, whereas decorative chrome plating is only millionths of an inch thick and will break like an eggshell if a hardness test is conducted, so its hardness can't really be measured directly.

Hard chrome plating is almost always applied to items that are made of steel, usually hardened steel. It is metallic in appearance, and can be shiny, but is not necessarily decorative. Hard chrome plating is not a finish that you would want on a wheel or bumper

What is 'Chrome'

Chrome is slang for Chromium, one of the 92 naturally occurring chemical elements. Chrome is a metal, but it is not useful as a solid, pure substance. Things are never made of solid chrome. Rather, when you hear that something is chrome, what is really meant is that there is a thin layer of chrome, a plating of chrome, on the object (the bulk of the object usually being steel, but sometimes aluminum, brass, copper, plastic, or stainless steel).

A cause of occasional confusion is the fact that people may tend to describe any shiny finish as "chrome" even when it really has nothing to do with chromium. For example, brightly polished aluminum motorcycle parts, electropolished stainless steel boat rigging, vacuum metallized mylar balloons and helmets, semi-shiny painted wheels, and nickel plated oven racks are sometimes called 'chrome' by the lay person.

Indeed it's not always easy to tell real chrome plating from other finishes if the parts are not side by side. When a chrome plated finish sits right next to another bright finish though, the other finish usually won't compare very favorably :-)

Chrome plating is more reflective (brighter), bluer (less pale, grayish, or yellowish), and more specular (the reflection is deeper, less distorted, more like a mirror) than other finishes. Put one end of a tape measure against a bright finish, and see how many inches of numbers you can clearly read in the reflection -- you can see skywriting clearly reflected in top quality chrome plating. And there's a hard to define "glint" to chrome plating that almost nothing else has.

What's the difference between "Chrome Plating", "Chrome Electroplating", "Chrome Dipping", "Chroming", etc.?

Nothing. Chrome is always applied by electroplating, it is never melted onto parts in the fashion of chocolate on strawberries, sprayed on like paint, or applied in any other way than by electroplating. Note the previous paragraph, though, that everything that is somewhat reflective is not necessarily real chrome plating.

Conventional electrolytic nickel plating is decorative, functional, and corrosion resistant but it tarnishes and it is not as hard as chromium.Electroless nickel plating (actually autocatalytic nickel plating) is a glassy nickel-phosphorous coating that is very corrosion resistant and quite hard, and often used on rough-service applications like down-hole applications.Chrome plating may be either a thick layer of chrome (generally known as hard chrome) that offers exceptional hardness, wear-resistance, and oil-holding capability, but limited corrosion resistance; or it may be nickel-chrome (nickel plating followed by a flash of chrome for tarnish resistance and extra corrosion resistance, as is employed on truck bumpers and automotive brightwork).

Advantages of the nickel and chrome plated steels

The corrosion of the chrome rods, especially in aggressive environmental conditions, has always been a big problem in the design and construction of hydraulic cylinders. The nickel and chrome plating technology provide superior qualities of corrosion resistance.
On the market you can find chrome bars with a salt spray resistance of 200 hours Rating 10 in NSS test ,also of 500 hours Rating 10 in NSS test which is still an excellent corrosion resistance, but in certain areas or under special conditions. We must also not forget that the chromium is micro-cracked and, consequently, corrosion can pe*****te these micro cracks and arrive at base steel.
The nickel layer is completely free from cracks, pores and the base material is isolated to the atmospheric corrosion, while the same time the chrome layer insure a very good wear resistance.
In cases where climatic conditions are extreme, where there is chemical corrosion, where the cylinders are working near the sea, in the military applications, in power generation, in any case where it is not possible to risk anything, the only safe solution to prevent corrosion is to use nickel and chrome plated steel, even better than stainless steel chrome plated and with a lowest cost than it.

By comparison with chromed stainless steel and double chromed steel, the nickel and chrome plated steel NIMAX NiCro (or NIMAX NiCro-T) is a product that provide these benefits. It is suitable for use in order to eliminate any risk of corrosion to rods of hydraulic cylinders. The base materials they are steel grades 20MnV6 (or 38MnVS6) with low carbon content and excellent weldability. If the base material is 38MnVS6 the nickel and chrome product combine the high strength with utmost corrosion resistance and excellent machinability.
Different applications of these materials: hydraulic cylinders used to working machines in very aggressive environments:
marine atmosphere, corrosive chemicals, extreme climates
power generation, military and aerospace sector
agriculture, mining industry, oil and gas industry
A thickness of 30 μm nickel plus one of 25 μm minimum chromium with hardness of 950 HV0.1 form a perfect anti-corrosion surface that guarantees a resistance of more than 1000 hours in ISO 9227 NSS (ASTM B117) Rating 10 according to ISO 10289, comparable to more than 350 hours in ISO 9227 AASS (ASTM B287) Rating 10.

Electroless Nickel Plating

Rolls Plated with Electroless Nickel
The process of adding an electroless nickel plating to a metal surface is an autocatalytic chemical reduction. This means that instead of using an outside source of electricity like in the similar electroplating process, the electroless nickel plating process uses a chemical bath to deposit a nickel / phosphorous layer onto the metallic surface. A surface coated in electroless nickel can even be used on non-conductive surfaces which allows for plating of a wider variety of base materials. This electroless process greatly improves the objects resistance to galling and leaves a predictable, uniform nickel coating for high-precision parts, which can be applied to both ferrous and non-ferrous surfaces of any geometry or intricate shape.

Advantages of zinc-plating.
Zinc is the best ally of steel against its natural enemy: rust. The protection afforded by zinc through the hot zinc-plating process may lengthen the average lifespan of steel products up to 30 years,

thus appreciably reducing maintainance costs, increasing safety standards and contributing to a better environment. In the first place, the zinc layer provides a protective barrier between steel and the atmosphere; besides, in the case cracks form in the zinc layer, zinc still protects steel cathodically, that is by forming a layer of insoluble zinc salts by ion movement towards the bare steel surface. The high quality zinc layer takes advantage from the unique properties of zinc and steel to protect your steel products. Unprotected steel may last for 2 years before its functional and structural properties are compromised. Zinc-plated elements last instead up to 30 years even when exposed to the most unfavourable conditions, with no maintainance required, thus allowing double savings: reduction in maintainance costs and higher resistence of zinc-plated products. Thanks to our professionality we guarantee the most durable results and short time delivery of processed material.

Electroless nickel plating (EN) is an auto-catalytic chemical technique used to deposit a layer of nickel-phosphorus or nickel-boron alloy on a solid workpiece, such as metal or plastic. The process relies on the presence of a reducing agent, for example hydrated sodium hypophosphite (NaPO2H2·H2O) which reacts with the metal ions to deposit metal. The alloys with different percentage of phosphorus, ranging from 2-5 (low phosphorus) to up to 11-14 (high phosphorus) are possible. The metallurgical properties of alloys depend on the percentage of phosphorus.
